New official portraits of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, marking the 10th anniversary of Felipe's proclamation, have been unveiled today. The striking images were captured by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz for the Banco de España (Bank of Spain) and were taken during a session at the opulent Gasparini Hall of the Royal Palace on February 7th.
The choice of clothing perfectly complements the pictorial style of these images. King Felipe is dressed in the Spanish Army's gala uniform, adorned with decorations, a sash, and the Order of the Golden Fleece—the same attire he wore on his wedding day and at his proclamation as king.
Queen Letizia is seen wearing a black silk tulle evening dress with a strapless neckline, paired with a red silk cape. Both are vintage Cristóbal Balenciaga pieces loaned by the Antoni de Montpalau foundation.
The gown was made around 1948 for María Junyent, niece of the artist Oleguer Junyent, who lived very close to the designer's workshop in Barcelona.
The contrasting shawl cape belongs to a ceremonial ensemble also made in the Barcelona workshop in 1962. This ensemble, was commissioned by Maria del Carmen Ferrer-Cajigal de Robert, for the wedding ceremony of Juan Carlos of Bourbon and Sofía of Greece (King Felipe's parents).
For the portrait, Queen Letizia elegantly accessorized with the Joyas de Pasar diamond chaton earrings and Queen Ena's diamond collet necklace, which she first wore in 2019 for Emperor Naruhito's enthronement ceremony.
The portraits are part of the exhibition 'The Tyranny of Cronos', which has just opened and can be visited until 29th March 2025 at the Banco de España in Madrid. After their exhibition, they will hang in the Governing Council room of the institution.
