King Felipe and Queen Letizia concluded Day 2 of their State Visit to China with a gala dinner hosted by President Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan at the Great Hall of the People.

Their Majesties then joined the Chinese Presidential Couple at Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts for a concert by the Teatro Real Orchestra of Madrid, marking the Spanish ensemble’s debut in China.

For the gala occasion, Queen Letizia wore her black-and-white Carolina Herrera dress with embellished yoke, previously seen at the 2022 Princess of Asturias Awards (shown below).

Originally a cocktail-length piece from Carolina Herrera’s Fall 2018 collection, the silk dress was modified for the Queen with a longer, more formal skirt.

At first glance, I felt the top part of the dress lacked cohesion with the lower part. It looked like two parts of different dresses were stitched together. But after looking at it again I grew to like it because it is different and makes for an unique evening look. I think it works. I also like the First Lady's gown with the embellishment along the sides. Both ladies look glamourous.

I wish I could get more on board with this Carolina Herrera dress, but it doesn't quite chime with me. I don't for one moment question it as a most suitable choice for a gala dinner, there's certainly celebration in the ornate embellished yoke. But somehow the contrast between that fancy top and the plain back of the dress fabric is jarring and not complementary to the whole.

I like the front slit in the skirt, that seems to happen quite naturally coming from the pretty waist gathering, and which breaks up the flat monochrome fabric. The dress as a whole works I think, but just needs a way to soften that yoke.

I love the neat black accessories and welcome the sleek updo which means the wonderful Ansorena diamond and Pearly drop earrings can be clearly seen. Overall, a success for Letizia and Spain.

Aside from liking the dress a little shorter, I love this gown. The top half is pretty a nice addition. Its quite effective. The diamond and pearl earrings are beautiful. i like the small black clutch.
