Queen Letizia stuns in vintage Balenciaga for official portrait release

New official portraits of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, marking the 10th anniversary of Felipe's proclamation, have been unveiled today. The striking images were captured by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz for the Banco de España (Bank of Spain) and were taken during a session at the opulent Gasparini Hall of the Royal Palace on February 7th.

The choice of clothing perfectly complements the pictorial style of these images.  King Felipe is dressed in the Spanish Army's gala uniform, adorned with decorations, a sash, and the Order of the Golden Fleece—the same attire he wore on his wedding day and at his proclamation as king.

Queen Letizia is seen wearing a black silk tulle evening dress with a strapless neckline, paired with a red silk cape. Both are vintage Cristóbal Balenciaga pieces loaned by the Antoni de Montpalau foundation.

The gown was made around 1948 for María Junyent, niece of the artist Oleguer Junyent, who lived very close to the designer's workshop in Barcelona.

The contrasting shawl cape belongs to a ceremonial ensemble also made in the Barcelona workshop in 1962. This ensemble, was commissioned by Maria del Carmen Ferrer-Cajigal de Robert, for the wedding ceremony of Juan Carlos of Bourbon and Sofía of Greece (King Felipe's parents).

For the portrait, Queen Letizia elegantly accessorized with the Joyas de Pasar diamond chaton earrings and Queen Ena's diamond collet necklace, which she first wore in 2019 for Emperor Naruhito's enthronement ceremony.

The portraits are part of the exhibition 'The Tyranny of Cronos', which has just opened and can be visited until 29th March 2025 at the Banco de España in Madrid. After their exhibition, they will hang in the Governing Council room of the institution.

This is absolutely iconic! When I first saw it on X, I thought it was AI-generated—a fantasy version of Queen Letizia. I’m completely blown away by this exquisite portrait. It’s truly breathtaking. I’ve heard some say they wished Letizia had worn a tiara, but I believe this portrait proves she doesn’t need one to appear majestic and regal!

Only Isabel II wore a tiara in a portrait because she was the Queen, the other ones have been Consorts so for the history not the Monarch.
Leonor will wear the Crown in the portraits.

She looks sensational.
Beautiful gown, absolutely stunning.
Her choice of jewellery perfect.
The King looks very regal and majestic.
The most divine portraits I have ever seen and now my favourites.

WOW this entire look is striking, dramatic and very regal. From the dress with the beautiful gathers in the bodice, to the red shawl, to the exquisite jewels, to the hair and makeup, this is one of Letizia's best appearances. And King Filipe looks very powerful also.

The gown is beautiful and looks great with the burgundy cloak or cape which is magnificent. And it's great to see Letizia wearing a necklace for a change. It really enhances the outfit. Both the King and Queen look very regal and majestic.

This has to be the most iconic portrait of Letizia, she looks magnificently regal as well as beautiful. Looking at the studio shot of the Balencaiga dress I don't particularly like it, but it has sure been transformed by the context!

The bare shoulders are beautiful with Letizia's loose, gently styled hair, and the stunning diamond collet necklace and chaton earrings.
The fitted body giving out to a full flared skirt has clear Spanish echoes of flamenco. It is an amazing vintage creation and a most brilliant piece of recycling that clearly has nothing second-hand about it.

The dramatic cape and way it is worn is a clear wowser, its ruffled exaggeration superb and I think Letizia carries it off brilliantly. I have seen detractions about the whole outfit and find them small minded, this is simply the time and the place for such an outfit. The pairing of the two portraits is simple genius.
