Her Majesty looked somber in a new black flutter sleeve dress by Carolina Herrera. The A-line number is from the designer's Pre-Fall 2018 collection.

You are right to respect the great skill of the house of Herrera, & those beautiful liquid lines in a classic style 😊

I realize this is a funeral service and fashion should be secondary to the solemnity of the occasion. However the CH dress is a perfect choice to honour the passing of Mr. Rubalcaba. The flutter sleeves, A-line skirt and black colour come together to create a divine dress which shows respect for everyone in attendance.

I can't quite believe Letizia would need a whole new dress for a funeral, she has quite a selection of black ones already. This one is very lovely, though, and I love the working of the sleeves with their attached ruffle, the seaming is beautiful and a discreet decoration. I'm not quite sure why she would have chosen slingback shoes, especially with their flash of red on the sole, they seem a bit party-style for a solemn ceremony, but maybe they suit a youthful style of dress with its pretty princess line. She remains, as ever, well within the bounds of propriety overall though.

I think she wears those shoes because of the heat, I do not remember well, yesterday 34C....it seems tomorrow it will drop.
I am rambling though...😃

The heat would certainly be one explanation for the slingback - thanks!

It is from 2018, perhaps we could have not seen it until now.

Bertie, that is one of the perks of being a royal- you get to buy an abundance of clothes that you don't really need. I noticed Letizia has about 6 beige trench coats that are all very similar. Why so many? The royals obviously don't believe in minimalism. Even the Spaniards who are supposed to be frugal.

In fact her mum and sister owns many of the clothes she does not wear anymore....Nowadays Leonor and Sofía wear them also, the trech coats are an example.

I agree with what you say, Bertie about the dress. The sleeves are very pretty and give a respectful but non dowdy look. You are spot on about the shoes. The sling back and red sole are frivolous for a funeral. I don't buy the argument that the shoes are necessary due to the extreme heat in Spain. A sling back is not letting very much air in and surely she has a black shoe with no red sole.

Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba was a socialist, I doubt he believed in God, so in fact it was too much formal. Most funerals nowadays are very informal here, many people is agnostic.

Probably a wink to the PSOE, the socialist party Pérez Rubalcaba's.

Thanks for all the comments, though I was trýing hard not to point too stern a finger at Letizia! I was more curious about the shoes than critical, for me Letizia's natural elegance carries her through as ever.

Bertie, you are at the detail, which is not a critic, only perfectionist. I would have not notice it. Your input is always interesting

An elegant ensemble befitting the occasion.

I hope the renovation work is going well!

A very dignified ensemble for the occasion. The Queen looks appropriately dressed.
