The King and Queen of Spain continued video conferences at the Palace of Zarzuela.
Queen Letizia held a video conference with the heads of Club de Fútbol Femenino Olympia de Las Rozas (Olympia de Las Rozas Women's Soccer Club). The club combines the practice of soccer with educational development based on non-sports activities that build towards personal development. Since the suspension of all training and competitions due to the pandemic, coaches have sent players exercise plans and challenges to maintain fitness and morale, in addition, players have written letters carrying messages of hope and affection to the elderly residents in Las Rozas.
Their Majesties chaired a virtual plenary session with the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) - it is the official royal institution responsible for overseeing the Spanish language. Thursday's plenary was dedicated to the study and debate of some of the most used words during the crisis, in order to complete the definitions of those that are already in dictionaries and to study the possible incorporation of others. During the pandemic, the RAE has continued full institutional functioning, in academic activity, and work with collaborators to provide services to citizens with new working methods.

Queen Letizia held a video conference with representatives of the Federación de Distribuidores Cinematográficos FEDICINE (Federation of Cinematographic Distributors). They informed Her Majesty that 2019 had the highest number of viewers in the last decade, and the upward trend was maintained for the first two months of 2020. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a complete halt of the production and distribution of cinema. Moving forward one of the main concerns is that public confidence will take a while to return and will be challenging for distributors and producers risking their films. The representatives stressed that despite losses, companies are making a great effort to maintain employment and are dedicated to providing films and investing in advertising and promotion.
Their Majesties later held a video conference with Foro de Marcas Renombradas Españolas (Forum of Renowned Spanish Brands). Mulitple conversations included prominent honorary ambassadors of the Spain Brand from the fields of science, culture, and sport; Valentín Fuster, María Blasco, Pedro L. Alonso, Antonio Banderas, Edurne Pasabán, Isabel Coixet, Pau Gasol, Rafael Nadal, and Fernando Alonso. Those involved shared how the pandemic has affected their respective area and stressed the importance of a collective plan to help unite efforts across companies, administrations, and public institutions to overcome the post-pandemic impact on Spain economically and socially while strengthening international confidence in Spain.

Queen Letizia held a video conference with members of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Federation of Diabetes (FEDE), who explained how the lives of nearly 6 million people with diabetes in Spain have been altered, along with the work of FEDE member federations and associations since the COVID-19 pandemic. The FEDE has reinforced its communication channels with the aim of counterbalancing incorrect information and launched a number of initiatives and training talks via online programs with the objective of continuing their care for members and their families.
Their Majesties held a video conference with representatives from Spanish Volunteer Platform - an organization that represents 80 state-level volunteer entities in different fields. It is estimated that there are approximately 2.7 million volunteers in Spain of which more than 50% are actively volunteering during the crisis. Currently, the most pertinent volunteer programs are; psychological and caregivers for the elderly, health and socio-health personnel, care for immigrants, and those in uncertain situations.
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia held a video conference with Museo Nacional del Prado (The Prado Museum). The president of the Royal Board of the Prado Museum, Javier Solana, and the director of the Prado Museum, Miguel Falomir, explained the actions undertaken by the gallery during the pandemic. The Museum has reinforced its online activity and launched 'El Prado contigo' (El Prado With You) with the aim of remaining connected with the public which is built upon the Museum's commitment in recent years to digital development. They also expressed concern regarding the Museum's future plans due to the economic hit the institution is currently suffering as a result of COVID-19.
Following the easing of Spain's strict COVID-19 lockdown, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia took the opportunity to visit the headquarters of the Madrid 112 Security and Emergency Agency on Monday.
Their Majesties presided over the daily meeting held by the 112 operation in the Community of Madrid and toured the 112 room where they witnessed the work of the operators; the Civil Guard, the National Police, Civil Protection, the Emergency Medical Service of Madrid-SUMMA, SAMUR-Civil Protection, Forest Agents and Fire Department of the Community of Madrid.
The King and Queen of Spain commended the work of the 112 Emergency Agency in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Queen Letizia looked professional in her dark blue Hugo Boss pant suit.
This was the last outfit she wore before the lockdown on a visit to Paris in mid-March.
The suit consists of the Hugo Boss dark blue 'Jutana' Crepe Double Button Jacket and the Hugo Boss 'Tiluna1' formal trousers.

Over the weekend Their Majesties held telephone calls with; General Hospital Mateu Orfila in Menorca, Central University Hospital in Asturias, Hospital Sant Joan de Déu of the Althaia de Manresa Foundation in Barcelona, Hospital Universitario Severo Ochoa de Leganés in Madrid, Atencion Primaria de la Comunidad in Madrid, and Hospital Universitario de Basurto.

Her Majesty held a video conference with directors and employers of the Residencia de Estudiantes (Students Residence) - a cultural research institution. The pandemic has suspended all residential activity of students and researchers. The Residence has put into place an infrastructure that allows remote access to the information and services for all personnel concerned. They explained how they consider the situation to be an unprecedented challenge which they hope to turn into an opportunity.
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia then held a video conference with representatives of the Confederación Empresarial de Hostelería de España (Spanish Business Confederation of Hospitality). They were informed of the great uncertainty facing the hospitality and tourism sector from the effects of the pandemic. . Hospitality and tourism are among the main engines of economic and social development in Spain. The hospitality sector is made up of more than 300,000 establishments that employ 1.7 million workers, it's contribution is sizable to the national GDP.
The King and Queen of Spain held a video conference and telephone calls at the Palace of Zarzuela today to mark the occasion of World Book Day in honour of Spain's greatest writer, Miguel de Cervantes.
Their Majesties held a video conference with the heads of Instituto Cervantes (IC). They were informed of the pandemic's effect on the institution and the measures underway to confront it. The IC's objectives are the promotion and teaching of the Spanish language and the dissemination of the culture of Spain and Latin America. The heads outlined that the main target has been to maintain communication with all uses of the IC. Classes are held via electronic means, expansion of services, and new web spaces have been created for communication and dissemination of the Institute's activity. All personnel have remained at their destinations, except in exceptional cases. There has been a 2,600% increase in AVE Global online courses compared to last year. The crisis has opened new opportunities for the development of virtual education that allows reaching beyond the headquarters of the IC.
The 23rd of April marks World Book Day which was established in 1995 to commemorate the death of Miguel de Cervantes. The occasion is marked in Spain with the delivery of the Cervantes Prize which honours the lifetime achievement of an outstanding writer in the Spanish language.
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia preside over the annual event, which is held at the University of Alcalá in the town of Alcalá de Henares - the birthplace of Cervantes who is best known for his masterpiece, Don Quixote. The pandemic has prevented the event going ahead this year. Their Majesties wanted to maintain meetings that would have occurred today and held telephone calls with the following; Joan Margarit, poet and architect who would have received the Cervantes Prize 2019, mayor of Alcalá de Henares, Javier Rodríguez Palacios - the local authority linked to the Cervantes Prize, Rector of the University of Alcalá, José Vicente Saz Pérez - the academic authority linked to the Cervantes Prize and the Minister of Culture José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes.

Her Majesty held a video conference with the heads of the Hospital Materno Infantil Gregorio Maranon in Madrid. Queen Letizia was informed that as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic the maternal hospital was designated as a centre for urgent obstetric-gynecological care and high-risk deliveries. The hospital also provides care to patients with COVID-19 both in the obstetric and children's area while guaranteeing the safety of care for the rest of the patients.

Their Majesties later held a video conference with the president of the Medical Profession Forum, and the president of the Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SEGG). The presidents explained the work carried out by Primary Care professionals in the care and treatment of the elderly during the pandemic.
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia held a video conference with Consejo de la Juventud de España CJE (Spanish Youth Council). Job security for the youth has been greatly affected by the crisis. The youth often work on temporary contracts in sectors that have taken a hit by the pandemic such as hospitality. Before the health crisis, people between 14-30 were already the age group with the highest risk of poverty and social exclusion. The CJE in collaboration with youth organisations has launched the campaign 'La juventud hace su parte' (youth does its part), with the aim of collecting resources in health, employment, leisure, information, training, etc.

Queen Letizia first held a video conference with representatives of Fundación Integra. The Foundation supports people in severe social exclusion and people with disabilities, helping them to regain control of their lives through job placement. The pandemic has aggravated uncertain living conditions and economic difficulties for them. Current hiring is focused on filling positions which are a result of the pandemic such as substitutes for sick leave, or cleaning and disinfection personnel. However, despite the great need for a job, candidates may have difficulty accepting positions offered by the Foundation as they may have health issues or a lack of support to look after small children. The Foundation has adapted to the situation by conducting interviews over the phone.
Their Majesties then held a video conference with the heads of Farmaindustria, who informed them of the vital participation of the pharmaceutical industry during the crisis with the supply of medication and investigation into vaccines. They highlighted the development of treatments for current patients and vaccines. There are at least 35 clinical trials in Spain with more than 200 participants in hospitals. The companies associated with Farmaindustria have donated more than 8 million euros for aid and 250 plus employees have offered to collaborate with hospital centers, field hospitals, analysis laboratories or any other activity that may require them.

The researchers explained CSIC's commitment to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, containment, impact, and investigation of COVID-19. Professor Enjuanes' group at the CSIC's National Center for Biotechnology is completing the assembly of a weakened version of the virus that will serve as the basis for a vaccine. The CSIC Global Health / Global Health Platform aims to coordinate the research of more than 150 CSIC groups from multiple disciplines across science, economics, and philosophy, covering all aspects of the pandemic.

The Superior Sports Council (CSD) and Ministry of Health have implemented measures to guarantee the health and well-being of athletes and their commitment to promote sport.
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia held a video conference with representatives from Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA), who explained how the network's airports are becoming part of the chain that allows all-cargo flights with critical supplies. Furthermore, they have helped Spanish citizens return home and foreigners who were in Spain. AENA has also donated two million Euros to contribute to the development of projects related to treatments or vaccines against COVID-19.

Earlier in the day, Queen Letizia held a telephone conversation with Her Royal Highness Princess Dina Mired of Jordan, President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). They discussed the challenges facing the international cancer community during the pandemic. The royal ladies have a longstanding working relationship and below are some of the occasions they have publicly met.
