King Felipe addressed an assembly and said that "throughout history, our universities have shown themselves capable of adapting to new environments and to overcome all sorts of challenges and difficulties" and noted its "essential contribution to building a better Spain".
Queen Letizia wore her Felipe Varela shutter pleat dress. The berry sheath dress debuted in February 2009, and it made headlines when she wore it a couple months later at a luncheon for the then French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni.

Today, their Majesties marked the 25th anniversary of King Felipe's promotion to lieutenant within the ranks of the navy. Queen Letizia joined her husband in Pontevedra for the commemorations which were held at the same academy where on 16th July 1989 Don Felipe received his lieutenant’s office from his grandfather, Juan de Borbón, Count of Barcelona. King Felipe was dressed in his naval white uniform, while Queen Letizia wore a simple yet elegant outfit consisting of black trousers, fitted top and her woven Felipe Varela jacket. The classic tweed jacket dates back to September 2009, where Letizia wore it to an event in Burgos, Spain. She has worn it repeatedly since then. Today, Letizia wore black platform peep-toe heels by Magrit, a style she owns in several colors. She completed the outfit with her TOUS 'Dinah' pink opal earrings. The King and Queen of Spain concluded their 3-day visit to the Big Apple with a reception for member state delegates of the United Nations. Queen Letizia wore a beautiful Felipe Varela black cocktail dress adorned with a black crystal neckline which extends to the back.
Queen Letizia wore her hair in an elegant plaited chignon which showed off her dazzling "wedding" earrings. She completed the look with a new clutch and shoes both from Magrit. The sandals are the 'Delia' model with feature swirl straps. Letizia's version does not appear to have the Swarovski crystal adornments.
Letizia's bag is the 'Nassa' clutch which is new to the Magrit collection.
Europe's newly ascended queens sat side by side as they waited for proceedings to begin at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. Queen Letizia and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands looked on as King Felipe addressed the assembly. Following the opening ceremony of the General Debate, Their Majesties held a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban ki-moon. For today's proceedings, Queen Letizia wore a smart suit dress by her designer of choice, Felipe Varela. She debuted a monochromatic ensemble consisting of an off-white wool crepe jacket and black sheath dress. Queen Letizia looked stunning in a sparkly bespoke dress by Felipe Varela. The cocktail dress is rendered in silk and embellished with five different shades of blue Swarovski crystals which create a tonal gradient effect.
The dress has an off the shoulder neckline and is finished with cap sleeves. The neckline resembles this ready-to-wear piece from Varela's Winter 2013/14 collection
Doña Letizia coordinated the dress with a new pair of Magrit black satin heels featuring a peep-toe opening and single cross-over strap. She also owns a similar style in blush pink which she debuted in Paris in July. The shoes are a bespoke version of the sandals below.
Tonight, she wore her hair up and showed off an impressive pair of aquamarine teardrop earrings.
The earrings were a gift from Italian jewelery house, Bvlgari following the birth of Letizia's first daughter, Leonor. Here we see Letizia wear them to a formal function in May 2006.

Today, the King and Queen of Spain continued their busy schedule in New York. The day began with a presentation by King Felipe VI to the United Nations Climate Summit. This was his first speech abroad as Head of State. During his speech, Don Felipe spoke about the need to tackle climate change and Spain’s efforts at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Queen Letizia was also in attendance at the summit. Following King Felipe's presentation, their Majesties carried out separate agendas. Queen Letizia meet with the directors of FAO and UNICEF. This was followed by a meeting with WHO Director-General Margaret Chan. Meanwhile, King Felipe headed to the Waldorf Astoria hotel to meet with President Barack Obama. For today's important meetings, Queen Letizia wore a tailored jacket and dress combination by her favorite Spanish designer, Felipe Varela. The outfit is bespoke but shares elements with a jacket from Varela's pre-fall 2014 collection. Letizia's modified jacket has a straight silhouette with pewter grosgrain panels that extend all the way to the hem. This photo shows that the back also has a grosgrain panel which is also a feature of the ready-to-wear piece. She wore a matching sheath dress rendered in the same double wool crepe fabric as the jacket and accessorized with pewter pointed toe pumps and clutch bag also from the current Felipe Varela collection. On Sunday, the Spanish King and Queen traveled to New York for a three day visit, which is their first to the USA as reining monarchs. The primary reason for their trip is to attend the Climate Summit and the opening of the 69th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. However, today they took the opportunity to show their ongoing commitment to education. King Felipe visited the Institute of International Education and meet with Fulbright Fellows, while Queen Letizia visited the Dos Puentes Elementary School in Harlem.
The Dos Puentes School has a large Hispanic student population and Queen Letizia visited the premises to observe acceptance of four New York schools into the network of International Spanish Academies.

Letizia first wore the single-breasted blazer separately in January 2014 for an audience with the Spanish Federation of Blood Donors. She teamed it with a pair of grey trousers. She repeated the look a couple weeks later when she visited the La Salle-college of Virgen del Mar in Almeria.
Following their solo engagements, the royal couple convened for lunch with representatives from the Spanish academic community in New York.

Their Majesties were then given a tour of some of the classrooms where they took the opportunity to chat with the students. For today's event, Letizia topped the dress with her white Hugo Boss 'Jeisana' blazer which features a peplum hem. This particular style has sold out, but there is a new season version currently on sale at Saks Fifth Ave. Doña Letizia accessorized the outfit in the same way she did the first time she wore it.
