King Felipe and Queen Letizia touched down in Paris this morning for a scheduled three-day state visit to France. What should have been a celebratory visit soon turned somber as details began to emerge of a tragic German passenger plane crash in the French Alps.
On arrival at the Les Invalides in the French capital, their Majesties were received by the Prime Minister of France, Manuel Valls. He briefed the royal couple on the situation following the crash of the Germanwings plane bound for Düsseldorf from Barcelona.
An official reception was held in the courtyard of the Les Invalides where the respective national anthems were played. Don Felipe and Prime Minister Valls reviewed the troops and witnessed a brief military parade.
Following the reception, King Felipe and Queen Letizia were welcomed by the French President, François Hollande in the Elysee Palace.
After a discussion with President Hollande, it was decided they would cancel the visit as a mark of respect to the victims of the Germanwings air crash.
In a joint appearance out the front of the Elysee Palace, the King and the French President announced the decision. In his speech, Don Felipe sent his condolences to the families of the deceased, many who were Spanish.
Before heading back home to Spain, their Majesties were invited to attend a cabinet crisis meeting held at the Ministry of the Interior. They were briefed with the latest news from the crash site.
It may seem unreasonable to comment on what Her Majesty wore, but because this blog is dedicated to cataloging Letizia's sartorial choices, I believe it is appropriate to make a brief mention of her outfit in this context.
Queen Letizia debuted a Felipe Varela patterned tweed dress and blue wool crepe blazer.
The sheath dress is from the Pre-Fall 2015/16 range:
She accessorized with her Felipe Varela blue leather clutch with Swarovski crystals and Magrit beige patent pumps.
She finished the outfit with her Aldao diamond and aquamarine white gold hoop earrings.

Queen Letizia made a sartorial nod to St Patrick's day by wearing an all-green ensemble to the Kunstmuseum Basel exhibition opening at the Reina Sofía museum (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía). This is the third occassion Letizia has repeated this outfit since debut on Columbus Day in October 2014. The ensemble consists of a custom Felipe Varela fitted teal boucle tweed dress, Magrit bespoke teal suede platform pumps and Felipe Varela pewter leather trapeze clutch. There was however a new addition to Letizia's look today. She premiered a new pair of earrings from Spanish born jeweler, Monica Vinader. Keeping with the green theme, she wore the 'Siren Wire' earrings (£115). The earrings feature an irregular shaped multi-faceted Green Onyx gemstone encased in 18ct Gold Plated Vermeil on Sterling Silver. The earrings are part of the 'Siren' collection which features coloured gemstones and organic shapes inspired by sea-worn treasures and the glamour of southern Italy. Here's just a small sample from the collection: This is the first time we have seen Queen Letizia wear a piece of jewelry from Monica Vinader, however she's not the first royal to do so. In October last year, the Duchess of Cambridge premiered a set from Monica Vinader's 'Riva' collection. Unfortunately, this was Letizia's last public engagement of the week. She was scheduled to meet the President of Costa Rica and his wife, however, they had to cancel their trip due to the recent volcanic eruption in their country. Queen Letizia began her working week at the UNICEF Spain headquarters where she met with the board of the UNICEF Spanish Committee. Doña Letizia is honorary president of the board and today she was informed of the organisation's priorities and its strategic plan to continue to achieve results for the most vulnerable children worldwide.
Queen Letizia arrived at the UNICEF offices in Madrid wearing a chic professional outfit.
For the occasion, Queen Letizia recycled a navy/white boucle jacket which she debuted in October 2010 on a visit to Miranda de Ebro.
There are mixed opinions about the origin of the jacket but the closest I could find is this style from Hugo Boss.
Today, Letizia paired the jacket with her Hugo Boss 'Bedina' silk-blend blouse (£220) and Hugo Boss 'Tuliana' navy trousers (£159) which she finished with a croc leather belt.
She carried her men's style Hugo Boss 'Norrmalm' business bag (£450).
On her feet were a new pair of black pointed-toe pumps. They are the Magrit 'Mila' style (US$247).
Letizia added a hint of sparkle to her outfit, wearing the Chanel Comète earrings.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia made an unannounced visit to the opera on Friday night. They attended the opera "The Public" at the Royal Theatre in Madrid. Their Majesties are honorary presidents of the Royal Theatre Foundation, and just last month they met with the board to discuss programming and management of the opera house. Queen Letizia wore an elegant monochromatic outfit consisting of black tuxedo trousers and a white silk blouse. The pants are her Hugo Boss 'Tawona' tuxedo-stripe pants (£270) which she debuted in January this year at the Antena 3 celebrations. The cowl-neck top is new and is from the current Spring/Summer collection of Adolfo Dominguez (€139). On her feet were the LODI 'Sara' ombre patent pumps. She carried her black clutch bag which features a rhinestone embellishment and lasso closure. The designer of the bag remains unidentified. Letizia wore her hair in a plaited chignon which showed off a beautiful pair of chandelier earrings from Yanes. These have been in her possession since June 2009. SHOP LETIZIA'S STYLE FOR LESS ... This evening, King Felipe and Queen Letizia attend an "In Memoriam" tribute concert to victims of terrorism in Spain. The were photographed entering the National Music Auditorium in Madrid. The event has been held annually since 2003 and is usually chaired by senior members of the Spanish royal family. It is organized by the Victims of Terrorism Foundation, sponsored by the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music, Montemadrid Foundation, the City of Madrid and the collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Radio Spanish television. Below we see a photo of Their Majesties with the organizers and sponsors. Their Majesties sat in the first row of the amphitheater and stood with the audience during the minute silence to honor all victims of terrorism. Given the somber nature of the event, Letizia appropriately wore an all black outfit. The ensemble consists of pieces we have already seen her wear on several occasions. The black sheer sequin blouse is by her designer of choice, Felipe Varela. She paired the top with her Hugo Boss 'Taru' balck slim-fit wool-blend trousers (£169). Her clutch was also by Hugo Boss. On her feet were the Carolina Herrera black patent and suede pumps. She finished the look with her citrine and diamond white gold earrings believed to be from Yanes. What I loved most about Letizia's look tonight was her hair. It's been a long time since we've seen it down with wavy tassels! SHOP QUEEN LETIIZIA'S STYLE FOR LESS ... Today, Their Majesties inaugurated the exhibition "Teresa of Jesus: The proof of my truth" which is about the life and work of Saint Teresa of Ávila in commemoration of the V centennial of her birth. Queen Letizia looked chic and glamorous as she arrived at the National Library of Spain wearing a new navy jumpsuit from high-street label Mango (US$99.99). The trendy romper is from the Mango Spring 2015 collection and has just hit the stores. You can buy it directly from Mango or Amazon. The flowy long jumpsuit has a v-neckline with a zip fastening on the front. It features cap sleeves, twin side pockets, elastic waistband and keyhole fastening on the back. Queen Letizia coordinated the outfit with metallic accessories which provided a lovely contrast to the navy jumpsuit. She cinched the suit with a wide bronze belt and she carried her Carolina Herrera clutch from the Spring/Summer 2013 collection. Both pieces are repeats and Letizia debuted the handbag in June 2013 at the opening concert of Spain-Japan Dual Year. On her feet were the Magrit strappy sandals which have been in her closet for many years. Below is a closer look at Queen Letizia's gold cascading earrings and pretty up-do. Today King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain traveled to the city of Zaragoza to visit the 'Goya and Zaragoza' exhibition at the Camon Aznar Museum. The exhibition is a collection of works by Spanish artist Francisco Goya in his years of training prior to 1775. He was raised and trained in Zaragoza, before moving to Madrid to further his art studies. Their Majesties are art enthusiasts and always seek to attend events that bring attention to historic Spanish artists. They clearly enjoyed the exhibition today. Queen Letizia opted for a tweed jacket and black trousers, an outfit she has repeated on numerous occasions with subtle variations since February 2012. The ensemble consists of Uterqüe multi-coloured tweed jacket, Hugo Boss 'Taru' black straight leg trouser pants (£169) and a fuchsia pink blouse. It can be difficult to identify the countless black trouser pants worn by Letizia, but today we can clearly see the detail of the Hugo Boss 'Taru' style. These slim-fit wool-blend pants by BOSS have a wide waistband with a side tab. They also have 2 diagonal slash pockets on the front, and 2 piped pockets on the back. Today, Letizia accessorized the outfit with her Magrit black leather peep-toe heels and Uterque black croc stamped wristlet clutch. She wore her butterfly-shaped earrings from Spanish jeweler, Elena C. These have been in her collection since May 2013, but this is the first time she has worn them since becoming Queen in June last year. The Elena C mini butterfly earrings feature diamonds set in 18K white gold. They retail for €595. As honorary president of the Spanish Federation For Rare Diseases, Queen Letizia presided over a ceremony at the Spanish Senate to mark World Rare Disease Day.
Her Majesty delivered a speech in which she empathized with the hardships families endure that have children suffering from a rare disease. She also stressed the importance of scientific research in the search for cures, and acknowledged individuals and organizations who support people with rare diseases.
Following the ceremony, Queen Letizia took time to meet families and children living with a rare disease. She was naturally tender and affectionate with the people she met.
Today, Letizia opted for a low key yet professional style.
She recycled the outfit she debuted in November last year at the 75th anniversary of the Higher Council for Scientific Research.
The outfit consists of a Mango floral print blouse and red blazer (probably from Felipe Varela), and black straight leg trousers (most likely Hugo Boss).
On her feet were the Carolina Herrera black patent and suede pumps.
She wore her Link of London Hope Egg earrings.
Today, Doña Letizia premiered a new black leather clutch that has a semi-circle cutout along the base of the purse.
The handbag is by the Spanish firm, Cucareliquia. The style is called 'Archy' and is made from nappa leather.
This €535 clutch is also available in other colour options.
Today's event marked the end of Queen Letizia busy public schedule this week. Casa Real is yet to publish next week's agenda so we'll have to wait as see what is in stall for Her Majesty!

Tonight, the Colombian president and his wife reciprocated last night's gala dinner by hosting a reception at the Royal Palace of El Pardo, their official residence during their stay in Spain.
The reception was marked by a relaxed atmosphere compared to last night's stately banquet. Queen Letizia dressed according and wore her chic Felipe Varela black tuxedo dress.
The double-breasted dress was first worn by Letizia in October 2013 at the Prince of Asturias Awards in Oviedo.
Tonight, Letizia showcased some new accessories and added a hint of gold. She carried a black clutch with a gold centerpiece, and wore beautiful filigree gold cascading earrings.
One of my blog readers, "Heaven" has identified the clutch as the Nina Ricci 'Arc' clutch (US$1200). The Italian made bag has a black smooth-leather exterior with a polished goldtone logo-engraved metal band around body of bag and suede insets at sides.
It is no longer available in black leather but comes in a range of other colours and materials:
There are no high-resolution photos of the earrings but they could be the 'Tamara' style by Vanilo. This would be a good fit for the occasion given the jewellery house was founded by two Colombian sisters whose designers are inspired by their country's rich heritage and beauty.
On her feet were the LODI 'Sara' ombre patent pumps.
Queen Letizia opted to wear her hair in the infamous "fake-bob" style.
On Thursday, Queen Letizia will continue her busy schedule and preside over the official ceremony for the "World Rare Disease Day".

On Monday evening, King Felipe & Queen Letizia held a gala dinner at the Royal Palace of Madrid for the President of Colombia and his wife, who are on an official visit to Spain.
Their were no wardrobe surprises from Queen Letizia at tonight's banquet. She wore her pearl grey Felipe Varela gown featuring a lace overlay adorned with thousands of tiny crystals. She teamed it with colour-coordinated accessories from Magrit.
She last wore this ensemble in April 2013 at the inauguration of King Willem Alexander of the Netherlands.
Tonight, Her Majesty wore the Order of Merit Grand Cross sash (Colombia) with a diamond brooch which is originates from the centerpiece of the "Princess" tiara.
Tonight she opted to wear the the Mellerio Floral Tiara, a piece she has donned on many occasions as Princess of Asturias. She also wore it to her first gala as Queen. The tiara is made of diamonds set in gold and silver floral motifs, and is the property of her mother-in-law, Queen Sofia. She complimented the headpiece with her diamond 'wedding earrings'.
While I always hope to see Letizia in a new outfit, I was not disappointed she repeated this exquisite gown. It deserved another spot in the limelight!
