This evening the King and Queen of Spain delivered the XXXIV edition of the "Francisco Cerecedo" Journalism Award at the Hotel Ritz in Madrid.
The purpose of the annual award is to honor journalists who battle the pressures and influences of power, and promote freedom of expression.
Queen Letizia arrived at the hotel lobby wearing her black Carolina Herrera fur neck cape.
The piece is from the designer's CH Fall 2016 collection. Her Majesty debuted the stole on the eve of the Princess of Asturias Awards 2016 and she also wore it to this same event last year.
Once inside, Letizia removed the cape to reveal a glittering mini-dress consisting of layers of white flounce fabric decorated with shimmering sequins.
The look is daringly different to her previous sartorial choices for this annual event where she has always favoured black ensembles. It will be interesting to see if Her Majesty continues to introduce more colour in future years.
The flapper-style dress trimmed with thick black velvet straps and neckline is said to be a creation of Teresa Helbig dating back to 2008! We assume this piece by the Barcelona born and based fashion designer has been sitting in Letizia's closet for some time!
Having opted for a statement dress Letizia kept her accessories to a minimum teaming the tiered gown with her black Felipe Varela satin clutch bag and black Prada Saffiano print patent leather pointy toe pumps.
Her jewellery was also kept simple settling on her 'wedding' earrings which were a gift from her in-laws, and the mysterious encrusted ring.

Love your blog! Love Letizia's style! I have followed Letizia's style for years. I can relate to her style because she is only a year older than me. Having said that, for me this dress just seemed out of place for this event. I think it would have worked better with hosery and a blazer. She looks naked compared to the other attendees.

I agree with you. It seems sometimes she gets it right and then on other occasions her love for bare arms is just too much skin. She is beautiful but tend to dress too sexy for her title or some occasions (compared to other guests)

I agree. This dress is IMO too sexy and too short for the occasion and her position. I actually gasped when I saw it I was so shocked. Not appropriate.

While I never expect Letizia to look 'stately', I think that this outfit is a major faux pas - she look like a Strictly Come Dancing ('Dancing with the Stars' outside the UK) contestant all dressed up to dance a charleston.

So true! She normally looks so elegant, but she does look like a Strictly contestant. It also puts me in mind of those Baby Doll nightdresses. A rare style error.

Back in 2004 Letizia looked like she was 80. This years dress makes eveyone else at the event look the boringest people alive 😨

Letizia looks stunning ,as always and if anyone can wear this dress she can. But personally I think she is showing way to much skin for the occasion. The other women in the photos are much more covered up. It was a journalism awards evening, not a night club setting. Also, even in Spain, winter is coming and this is a rather summer look. Letizia seldom makes a mistake but her choice was not the best this time.

I have to say, this isn’t my favorite. I agree that it looks more of a fun night out dancing type dress. The first thing I thought was, wow...so short. She is still pretty, just looks out of place.

She looks absolutely amazing in this adorable dress, but unfortunately out of place for this event.

I can't get on board with this dress, it's too baby-doll for me. Letizia does occasionally seem to mis-step on party dresses like these, where they are so very short. The sequinned flounces are beautifully worked but are a bit much seen in quantity. No -- I think I have to give this one a thumbs-down. Love the cape though!
