The dress is a deviation from her past looks for Easter Mass where she has favoured trousers or separates. Below is a gallery of Letizia's Easter Mass outfits since becoming queen.

The service is a private family affair and is not attended in an official capacity as Head of State.

Felipe & Letizia's first attendance as a couple was in 2004, when they were engaged to be married. Since then they have attended annually expect for 2007 due to the impending birth of Infanta Sofía.

Here's a look back at the past Easter Sunday services attended my the Spanish royal family. It's interesting to see how their family has evolved.

I've always liked the Queen in separates at Easter Mass, in the past she has looked modern and approachable. Sadly this Massimo Dutti doesn't excite me, I can't help feeling that it is a little dark and flimsy compared to the rest of the family's ensembles. Also I don't think it travelled well, it looks quite crushed - particularly the sleeves. On this occasion I think the belt would have benefited from an extra loop to hold the end in place. I appreciate that this look lets the girls shine and is a bridge between their outfits, the cream of the flowers echoing Leonor's coat and the navy blending with Sofia's trousers. The colour combinations of their outfits sit very comfortably together, Letizia's look is the most subdued. The clutch is a considered choice emphasising the red in the middle of the florals, the vibrant hue provides a welcome burst of colour. Hair and makeup are perfect and I love the Magrit navy suede shoes.

I agree with you about that extra belt loop, a wandering belt is the curse of many an otherwise lovely shirtwaister. It drives me nuts if my waist seam is showing when it should be covered! Thank you also for pointing out how Letizia's dress offset those of her daughters, I hadn't spotted that at all, she's acting as a well -judged foil so their outfits can be showcased. Sofia's pants outfit is very chic!

Hi Bertie, Sofia's outfit was my favourite, so chic! I loved the detailing of the back of her top.

Perfect Elizabeth!! As you have pointed out , it is a personal thing as the state and the church are not joined in Spain anymore, so they are not representing the people who in mayority are agnostic by the pools.

Back in the day the Royal Family used to spent vacations in Palma, however Letizia does not like it, they have been in Rome. The flew directly to Palma on Sunday, Queen Emérita Sofía was there though..

It's a nice change to see Letizia wearing a dress for Easter services instead of her usual pants. She looked so casual in past years. This dress embodies "Spring" with the subtle white floral print against the navy background. The style is classic and I love the flow of the skirt which is very feminine. Looking back I think her style has really improved over the years especially in the shoe department. The 2005 outfit was the worst and 2015 the best (IMO).

It is a casual event, in fact, it is a Catholic service...not Easter......for the Catholics it is a Holy Week.....totally different....Most people wear trousers, the odd thing is dresses.....Queen Emérita Sofía is Greek Orthodox, not Catholic actually..
Also they are not representing the Country...

Thanks for the background info., Wendy. I just noticed despite being Greek Orthodox, Queen Sofia seemed to always dress up for this occasion. I personally feel people are too casual these days.
I notice they wear jeans or dress down everywhere- to church, funeral homes, in courts of justice etc. In general people don't like dressing up anymore and it's sad.

OH My! In Spain you can see girls wearing shorts, jeans, etc...I do not attend mass too much though....I am not sure about the differences with the Anglican Church, it must be the Virgin, the communion, the Catholic Church ask for austerity...I am not sure what that means...I am not very religious...
Sofía is 81 years old.....so....she has never changed her hairstyle....also she always wears suits but never dresses...she has a dressmaker called Margarita Nuez, who dresses her..

Love the look back at the family. I like Letizia's style and pants don't bother me, but I love this dress and hope we see it often.

I agree with Sandy. People are maybe to casual these days. I think this is why I enjoy this blog so much. I can take inspiration from Letizia’s clothes and outfit choices. It seems like the rest of humanity is context to walk around in jeans and legging and tee shirts. And I’m not talking about poor people or those that have to wear those sorts of clothes for their work or jobs. Im talking about people of means that show up a church or funeral homes in distressed jeans and graphic tees. It’s definitely a choice not the fact they haven’t anything else to wear. And I’ll wager that some of those ripped jeans cost more than many of the dresses in my closet. I think those sorts of clothes show a lack of respect to the person or institution where they are being worn. I’m sorry to go on like this. But I know this is a fashion blog, about a beautiful and stylish lady who also happens to be a queen. It is so refreshing to view these posts and read all the comments. I always learn something, about the clothes or the country or the monarchy. And it’s nice to know that there are other people who care about fashion and how we present ourselves to the world.

Yes, I agree with both you ladies. I like to dress well but sometimes I feel like I stand out too much. I don't wear expensive designer clothes or anything. But I put a lot of time and effort into putting together fashionable and stylish outfits. Here in Canada there is a lot of obesity and that could be why people don't dress up. They don't feel good about themselves. And, Wendy I also wonder who buys all the beautiful clothes I see at Zara, H&M, Nordstroms, Saks 5th Avenue etc etc. Even wealthy people dress like slobs.

I have many dresses, I find them comfortable in summer.
Here women dress up to go to work, however in the weekeends less....

It depends the distric also, in the centre of Madrid is much better.....and in provinces too.

I think the Spanish women take better care of themselves and have more pride in their appearance. They put more effort into how they look including their clothes. I think you also eat a much healthier diet than us North Americans. We could learn from your example.

This is a brilliant dress for Letizia and a canny pick from the Massimo Dutti label, the way she wears it makes it look high-end. The shirt is trim to her figure above waist, and the skirt below flows full and beautiful in its generous flare. The floral print is just right. the blowsy roses work well with plenty of dark background between them. The red Menbur clutch is perfection to add spice. Love the archive photos over the years, you're so good at doing these and they are so informative!! Thank you.

I read everybody's comments with interest. I agree that the way many people dress down these days shows a general lack of respect for both institutions and others who may be in attendance, especially at special events. In the past I have always been somewhat surprised by seeing Letizia wearing pants to the Easter services. I come from a tradition in which we always dress in our best to go to church. In my opinion, this look is not only the most appropriate, but the loveliest, of all her Easter outfits. I adore a well constructed shirtwaist dress, and Leticia certainly wears this one well. I am glad she put a leather belt with it. The post does not say, but I assume it is a silk or georgette. (I know it's not always possible to know the material of any item, but I am always curious to know.) Her accessories are perfect. I hope she stays with this kind of look for future Easters. Thank you for the archived photos; it was a treat to review past family reunions. Btw, I like Queen Sofia's cream suit better than any of her previous choices. Everyone is looking great this year!

Marsha, you should see what people here wear on Christimas Day. They can't even make the effort for one very special day out of the year. The other day at work a woman came in wearing what looked like pyjama pants. I was shocked.

The Queen looks lovely in this style of dress. I thought she was appropriately dressed for the occasion.

I honestly think that Letizia really like to wear pants and that pantsuits and variations to it, are her actual, personal style and that she only wears dresses because of her role.
I don't mind it either way, I think she always looks great, I here I really like that the bag is red. It is such a nice pop of color.
