Their Majesties presided over the traditional celebration of the Pascua Militar, which is deeply rooted in the Spanish military and dates back to 1782 during the reign of Carlos III. The ceremony is held annually on the day of Epiphany at the Royal Palace of Madrid.

As tradition dedicates, Queen Letizia wore a long dress. It is customary for royal women to wear a full length gown to the Pascua Militar ceremony. Below is a look back at Letizia's previous ensembles since becoming Queen consort.

Today she opted for a luxurious midnight blue velvet gown and a new navy Emporio Armani metallic-tweed jacket (RRP US$745). It's believed that the dress is the same as the one she wore for the 2012 and 2014 Pascua Militar.

Letizia teamed the look with matching blue suede accessories by Magrit. She carried the 'Liz' clutch (€200) featuring a flap with peak turns.

On her feet were the Magrit 'Liza' pumps (€310) with a pointed toe, heart shaped vamp, and a retro-inspired heel.

The highlight of today's ensemble was the 'joyas de pasar' pearl and diamond brooch.  This is the first occasion we have seen Her Majesty wear the heirloom piece reserved for the exclusive use of Spanish queens.

As Queen Victoria Eugenia (Ena) described it, it's "a brooch with a large pale gray pearl surrounded by diamonds and from which hangs a pear-shaped pearl".  Below is a picture of Queen Ena wearing the brooch circa 1920's.

Later that afternoon, the Spanish royal family were pictured leaving Zarzuela Palace en route to the home of Letizia's father for private celebrations marking the Feast of the Epiphany.

Hi Elizabeth,
I think she wore the brooch a few years ago at National Day celebration, combined with a grey Felipe Varela skirt suit. Or am I wrong and was it another brooch?

Hi Veerle, that was a different brooch. They do however look very similar so I can see where the confusion stems from! x

Pascua Militar requires very formal attire and Letizia rose to the occasion with this magnificent outfit. Every aspect is beautiful from the gorgeous jacket, velvet dress, great shoes & purse and brilliantly designed CH cape. I especially love that pearl brooch. It seems Letizia is wearing more jewelry lately. Let's hope it's a trend that continues with her. My only complaint is that the pearl earrings should have been bigger because you can barely see them with this great outfit. Overall she gets an A+ for this one.

In my opinion this outfit is not up to Letezia’s usaual elegant standards for this occasion. The boucle jacket in itself is gorgeous but it does not pair well with the long velvet skirt. I appreciate that it can be somewhat difficult to style a long skirted ensemble for a daytime event taking place both inside and outside. She really hit it out of the park with her 2015 & 2016 ensembles.

It was really cold, minus 4 degrees in the morning in Madrid.

I like the way Letizia has paired full-length skirts with smart jackets on these occasions, it's a whole fresh take on the formal-business vibe. I think this year's jacket is gorgeous, love that textured weave. Her hair looks great with it's manageable level of messy rather than flopping bangs that can block vision. Shoes and bag are as elegant and spot on as one comes to expect from the savvy Spanish Queen and the joyas de pasar pearl and diamond brooch is a stunner, quite the highlight as you say, and beautifully showcased by such an elegant outfit. A great start to the new year.

This is a very deft look from Letizia. The tweed jacket is a neat counterpoint to the glorious fabric of the dress and I think works well for a daytime occasion. The earrings echo the stately brooch but on a much smaller scale so they don't compete for attention. Yet more echoing in the design of the pumps and clutch! Looking back, the outfit in 2008/9 is beautiful, 2010 is superb, and 2011 is kind of whimsical.

The dress code is long dress or with a jacket if it is cold. -4 degrees, she must have wore somethig thermal this year underneath.

I love those quiet details of peaked edging on bag and shoes. Contrast acheived with the utmost elegance.

I have read that the jacket is by Emporio Armani

I'll echo Stephie. This is deft. If you look at the neckline of the dress that shows through the top of the jacket the piping looks the same as the dress worn in '12 and '14. The fall of the skirt is also identical...and how stylish is she to take a jacket advertised as 'casual' on the Armani website and glam it up for such a formal occasion? A great opening salvo (pun intended)

Very disappointed that QL chose to wear a fur-collar cape. There are plenty of alternatives to fur these days and really, for how long was she outside?

She always wears fake fur. Another one who likes to stir things up....

I think the collar is faux fur. There was no product description on the Carolina Herrera website but I'm fairly confident this is a faux fur collar.

The Spanish media would have ripped her to pieces ..
