On Wednesday evening, King Felipe VI & Queen Letizia held a gala dinner at the Royal Palace of Madrid for the President of China and his wife, who are on a State visit to Spain.
Queen Letizia chose the understated black Felipe Varela velvet gown for the glittering event, which she debuted at last year's State gala dinner for the visiting Argentine president and First Lady.
Tonight, Her Majesty wore the Queen Maria Christina’s Cartier Loop Tiara for the first time!
The diadem is made of diamonds and pearls and set in platinum, and reportedly made by Cartier. This hefty tiara was a wedding present to Archduchess Maria Christina of Austria for her wedding to King Alfonso XII of Spain in 1879. The Royal Order of Sartorial Splendor has a detailed write-up on the piece.
Queen Letizia complemented the tiara with joyas de pasar pieces including the large chaton diamond earrings, and double diamond bracelets which she stacked on one arm for maximum glitz.
Her Majesty donned the Order of Carlos III sash pinned with a diamond Fleur de lys brooch originating from the centerpiece of her "Princess" tiara.
A closer look at Letizia's elegant up-do.

Oh, to think we might have missed this epic tiara debut had the blog been shuttered!! I am SO glad we managed to hang on long enough to see this. My word, the Spanish really know how to do a tiara!! Both this and the Fleur de Lys are some size, and Letizia is so perfectly poised to carry them off in true regal style. Breathtaking.

Elizabeth, are you back for good? I do hope so. I have missed your blog and wonderful style comments. I'd rather you blog about Letizia than other royals any day so I'm delighted to find you are still going. I hadn't checked in for a while because I thought you were stopping. Please, please say you've reconsidered!

I agree, the tiara is beautiful and so is Letizia. She looks so regal in these photos. It was a wise choice to pair it with a simple yet elegant gown so it is really shown to it's advantage.

This is breathtaking. Letizia's up-do beautifully balances the tiara, as does the slender lines of her gown. Elegance personified.

Such a spectacular tiara! Is this the first time she has worn it? And leave it to Letezia to do tiara hair that does not look like tiara hair, it simply looks elegant. Her styling of the bracelets is inspiring.

Both this and the Fleur de Lys tiara are pretty outsized compared with the ones I've been seeing on British Royals of late, the younger ones going for a sleeker fitting. It takes me a while to get used to them as they so nearly dwarf Letizia and I can believe they were made with much more grand tiara hair than Letizia's. The Spanish clearly got their hands on some serious bling in their day!

Regal! Not just her gown, tiara, sash....it's her stance, her posture, her facial expressions, her carriage. Regal!

I favour clean lines and modern design, so this Valera is a triumph. The sumptuous velvet and pleated detail across the waist take this into royal state visit territory. This gown is the perfect backstop to showcase spectacular jewels and the Queen's beauty to dramatic effect.

I agree with everyone thanking you for bringing this site back! So glad QL wears outfits repeatedly, even for high-impact events like this one. She pulls everything off with such natural ease. The joyas de pasar and tiara are just beautiful.

Thank you for giving us a close up look at the tiara, as well as its history. Thanks also for the close up look of Letizia's elegant updo. I'm so glad that for this event everything was exquisitely perfect, even down to the larger-sized diamond earrings to complement the "outsized" tiara (as Bertie calls it).
