Queen Letizia looked glamorous in a high-street style by Zara.
It is the brand's 'tweed dress with gem buttons'. Featuring an off-the-shoulder design, the midi length dress has short sleeves, front patch pockets and piping. It is finished with a frayed hem and rhinestone button fastening in the front. It originally retailed for £69.99 but is now reduced to only £19.99!
Queen Letizia added a navy skinny belt for definition at the waist.
On her feet she wore her navy Carolina Herrera suede slingback pumps.
Letizia wore gold hoop earrings and her Karen Hallam gold-plated sterling silver signature ring.

I love this dress! Especially the price of 19.99 pounds. The off the shoulder design is so pretty and perfect for warm weather. I also love the frayed hemline and the addition of the skinny belt. It's nice to see Letizia wearing hoop earring for a change. Everything is perfect about this outfit. This is another example of how you don't have to spend a fortune to look like a million bucks.

Sandy, I often see celebrities wearing sandals...during winter, with heavy winter coats! That is absolutely crazy for me! They can have any shoes at this planet and then, they wear sandals during winter and boots during summer! Meghan Markle wore open shoes without socks (tights or something) with the winter coat. I don't like it and I think it must be freezing. QL had summer dress and sandals, do you remember, that white short dress, and winter coat. And now tweed or something that looks like that. I don't know why celebrities do that.

Edita, I thinks its not so important for Letizia, she is working, she used to work as a journalist abd she borriwed the clothes. People worries about her fashion, she wears jeans and a t-shirt in her private life. Also in Spain few people speak if her outfits, if not her work....

Edita , Letizia is not a celebrity, if not a Queen or a Prinera Dama working. Back in the day Queen Sofía always used to wear the same hair daily and for ages, she never wore an updo or something, and a suit. No fashion at all....Nowadays the media pushes too much IMHO, she does not need to "dress" at all, she only has to support the King who is doing a great job as the Head of State.

Queen Letizia wears this high street style with panache. The dress is in keeping with the occasion and fits her well. Her choice of simple accessories suits the bold check fabric of the dress. Letizia's hair looks lovely and sets off the neckline of the dress.

I wouldn't wear tweed in the summer. It looks to heavy. Summer is for something light and airy. And for sandals...

It is not tweed, it costs 20 euros. Also the air conditioning is vey high, you can see that the other women wear blazers.o She does not want to show her feet because she has been criticised.

Yes, but fake tweed, it is an imitation. The real one costs a fortune.

Simone, I had noticed that Letizia never wears sandals or anything open toe. Actually most celebrities don't wear sandals. I think the feet of most people are unattractive and should be hidden.

Sandy, she used to wear sandals two years ago or so....However "some" people started speaking about the toes, that's right. I have not talked with her...lol....but I guess, that might be

Chanel has "summer tweed", I am not an expert but I think there is different tweeds which is a type of wool.

It's not tweed; Zara just called it tweed because the pattern looks like tweed. In fact it's made of polyester, viscose and some metal thread. You can check it on the Zara home page.

Love how QL makes a Zara look like a million bucks. Only thing I would suggest is to make sure the extra long strands to be cut off. You can see in the 3rd pic these extra long threads hanging off the hem.

Sadly, this dress is just slightly off for me. I think my problem is that it's supposed to be a loose fit trendy dress and I want it to be classical and tailored. The Queen succeeds in trying to achieve this with the addition of the waist belt which tapers the silhouette. Design wise I would have straightened the neckline, creating a definite boat neckline (it's the curved neckline that bothers me most) and shortened the sleeves. I would also have lowered the waist seam, made the skirt more fitted to the mid thigh, from there I would have gently faded into a fuller swisher skirt without the patch pockets. The rhinestone buttons and frayed edges are considered details along with the sophisticated colour pallet. Letizia looks polished and well put together, compared to similar designer styles this is a strong and inspired piece for a fraction of the price. It's excellent value for money and she wears it so well - my criticisms seem somewhat needless. The elegant Carolina Herrera slingbacks are the perfect compliment and the slim hoops provide a modern touch

I don't think anything can make up for the lack of quality tailoring from a high street piece. The quality of fabric doesn't sit as well or hang gracefully so we have what looks like an uneven front button fastening and a drooping back hem in some pics. It's clearly a very handy work dress and being put to good such use here by the Queen.

Hi Bertie, this dress is a tough one. The price of £20.00 was fantastic (I love to think that that is what she paid for it) and there are some considered details. But where it is so influenced by designer pieces it's hard not to compare it and find fault, which I did. I agree that it just doesn't hang gracefully. Looking at the look book photo I think Zara may have intended it to be a loose fit relaxed dress. If the waist seam had been in the right place I think it would have made a considerable difference to the fit overall. The Queen's elegant styling helps sell this look.

I think you're very generous to it, I think it was intended for the kind of city office commuter I used to be. I'm not so sure it can really stand up to the baroque setting of a regal palace. It could even look demeaning to the monarchy for its Queen to be reduced to wearing sale bargains. There's some high street that works and looks sassy but I'm not sure this is it :)

Bertie, people in Spain still thinks that she has too much money for clothing ( in general), only women who follow her fashion wants more changes to fun, very few ones. The king represents the Unity of the Country and they need to be very diplomatic. Even Leonor's education will be choose by the goverment, not by her parents.
Sandy

Bertie, I am disappointed that you feel Letizia may be demeaning the monarchy by wearing bargains. I feel just the opposite. She is elevating the monarchy by showing how she is more of a normal person. She's not wasting taxpayers money on expensive clothes.. That is far more admirable than the Duchess of Sussex who spends several thousands on one dress.

Hi Sandy, always like hearing from you and sorry if my views disappoint you this time! I quite understand what you're saying and generally find it easy to agree when the high street item in question works for me. I was just wondering if it was possible to consider another point of view on the matter as I'm not sure at what point a cheap outfit might become an embarrassment, even counting as a snub towards others at an engagement. I certainly hear what you're saying about Meghan, although I've reached the stage there where I feel if it isn't overpriced, poorly fitting and monochrome then she must be feeling unwell! Meghan of course is using private money for her wardrobe so there's no cost to anyone else, though I appreciate some feel there's still an image problem there.

Hi Bertie, I understand what you are saying. But, if you didn't know the price of the dress would you still think it looked cheap? I have seen some very expensive clothes at Nordstrom and Saks 5th Avenue that look very ordinary. Some of Ralph Lauren's Denim & Supply casual clothes literally look like dish rags but have high price tags. If you didn't know the price it might affect your opinion of them. And actually the retail price of Letizia's dress was originally 70 pounds which is not really cheap. It was on sale.
Bertie
20/7/2019 08:26:08 pm
Hi Sandy, I so agree there's nothing worse than an over-priced dress that ends up looking cheap! I don't think my quibble is with the price-tag per se but just what I see as poor fit on this one. Tho I'm curious to know how budget-conscious a royal can go before their appearance starts to raise concerns. Most of Letizia's picks are fine by me, I just seem a bit stuck on this one!

Wendy, I like the sound of this slimmed down monarchy. I wish the Britsh Royal Family would do the same. I only think the monarch and heirs should get the entitlements and the rest should make it on their own. I personally feel like the bigger the monarchy the more drama it causes. The BRF has shown that to be the case.

Milly, you are so right about the BRF. They are way to0 big. The Queen, her husband, children, children's spouses, grandchildren, their spouses, great grandchildren, cousins etc etc. I don't know how the public puts up with it. The Spanish are doing it right.
Bertie
18/7/2019 07:29:03 pm
Thank you Wendy, am never quite sure how Spain sees its monarchy :) Strictly speaking the BRF doesn't cost us a penny as the grant it receives is way less than the profit made on its estates and never mind the huge contribution via tourism. And the grant covers none of their living expenses, but is for maintenance of their historic palaces &c. These people are living in museums! King Felippe is lucky to have a more modern home.

The Queen looks stunning. Such a reasonably priced dress. I absolutely love this dress from top to bottom. I prefer the belt as opposed to without on the model. The photo directly underneath the pic of the model, the Queen looks beautiful. The sling back pumps look terrific. The earrings are my favourites, love hoops. First glance of the dress, also reminded me of the Erdem dress the Duchess of Cambridge wore.

Tweed is making a resurgence in the summer wardrobe. 'Good' tweed as said earlier is expensive, and can also be woven from silk. The event took place indoors where there is undoubtedly air conditioning. Even though the fabric looks heavy, the bare shoulders will certainly keep the wearer cool. The lack of quality shows because the dress 'hangs' on her, and has the unnecessary pockets to distract. The waistline seems more of an empire cut. A wider belt will improve the look for the next wearing. As with most of her things however, this woman can wear a burlap sack and still look fab.@ Jennifer. your design sounds like the off the shoulder black and white Carolina Herrera that she wore about this same time two years ago.

Hi Zoe, my changes are quite similar to the Herrera - I didn't realise. I must admit that I had quibbles with that dress too (I wish that it hadn't been altered and had been kept to it's original runway presentation) My alterations were inspired by a few boat neck dresses, I remembered by Chanel. I appreciate that even at full price this dress was never going to have the construction of a designer piece but I was letting my imagination get the better of me.

The original runway version of that dress had more stripes at the middle and more flight to the skirt. The changes seemed OK. Allowances should be made for the fact that she has to have things tailored to her body type, and most importantly feel comfortable in her own skin at these events. Your vision sounds nice though. Take the hem to the floor in tulip fashion, using a shiny jewel toned fabric, and there will only be one Queen in the room. (see the navy dress worn to the Guild Hall event in London).

Hi Zoe, you are absolutely right that feeling comfortable in something is key, if you feel uncomfortable in what you are wearing it usually shows. The navy Carolina Herrera gown you mention was stunning, equally modern and romantic. For me it was the fashion highlight of the State Visit.

Letizia is a stunning woman who can make just about every outfit look fabulous. But this is an inexpensive dress and I think that is how it appears. Odd threads are showing and it just doesn't hang the way a dress of quality would hang. In the first photo, perhaps due to the way she is standing, the dress looks frumpy...and I've never called Letizia that before. Sorry for me this is a miss. Like the shoes and earrings, however.

I find Queen Letizia's style so inspirational and she has proven time and time again you don't have to spend a lot of money to look fabulous. She usually looks better than the British duchesses who we know are big spenders. Whenever I go shopping for new clothes I use Letizia as my muse. I feel that my outfits have improved immensely since I started following her. Thanks Elizabeth for keeping this blog going, I would be lost without it!

What a coup for Zara to be dressing a crowned head of Europe at a reception in the Zarzuela Palace, endorsements don't get much better than this. It's a canny budget take on style staples of fringed tweed and cold shoulder neckline reworked into a handy day dress, all in Letizia's favourite monochrome and highly serviceable. I still love those Herrera slingbacks, and the slim belt was a wise choice for finish. Hoop earrings look great above bare shoulders as does Letizia's loose hair, looking lustrous. Nice work.

The Zarzuela palace is their home and it is not a palace in fact, it was a hunt cottage which has become into that. In fact they live in other "house" , that Felipe built for him as a single yet.

Why, thank you so much Wendy, I really appreciate your on-the-ground input, it brings these posts to life! Bertie, the "audiences" are at Zarzuela Palace (at home), when you have seen Letizia in a gown, that's The Royal Palace of Oriente or The Pardo Palace, or Aranjuez, etc...... not always they are in the same place as Buckimgham, there are many palaces in Madrid, every one has different dress code.

This dress looks like it came off the sale rack at Zara. As I list all the things I don't like about this dress I can't believe how much I sound like my mother! It may be intentional but I think the frayed hem looks messy (I didn't like the DOC's expensive Erdem frayed hem either), the neckline looks awkward and unflattering, there is no tailoring in the cut of the dress, it hangs unevenly, and I just know I would crinkle up my nose at the fabric.

Genevieve, I'm glad you mentioned the safety factor. We are not allowed to wear flip flops to work and not only because they are annoying with the constant flip-flopping sound but also due to the safety factor. You can stub your toes or drop a heavy stapler on your foot and be injured. They also don't give adequate support to the feet. So that is something we should all keep in mind about sandals. Closed shoes also look more elegant overall.

Genevieve, I have a woman sitting next to me at work who is wearing flip-flops everyday in the summer. Even though we have a dress code she still wears them and no one says anything. She walks around alot!! So I just have to put up with it. I'm afraid to complain because they might think I am being petty. Your comment will be posted after it is approved.
