The Queen of Spain attended a meeting within the framework of the Spanish Red Cross conference on "Gender Violence: Strategies and Challenges" at the charity's headquarters in Madrid.
The aim of the conference is to evaluate the organisations response in the fight against gender violence.
The Spanish Red Cross helps more than 20,000 female victims of gender violence per year. In 10 provinces they provide temporary shelter along with employment projects to reinforce personal and professional skills to re-enter the workforce.
Queen Letizia stepped out in a new grey pant suit by Hugo Boss.
It consists of the BOSS 'Jalorra' Glen Check Double Breasted Wool Jacket and a pair of wide-leg trousers in a matching pattern. I have not been able to find a stock photo of the coordinating trousers.
Queen Letizia teamed it with a soft off-white silk blouse by Mango (US$119.95).
Draped over her shoulder was a light sand Felipe Varela wool belted wrap coat.
The coat dates back to 2010 but this is the first occasion Letizia has publicly worn it since becoming Queen consort in June 2014.
Letizia complemented the professional look with her Hugo Boss 'Fanila' clutch and black Magrit pointy-toe pumps.
She finished the ensemble with her gold bamboo design huggie hoop earrings.

While I adore the classic Glen Plaid check pattern of this suit, I can't help but feel it's a couple of sizes too big for Letizia. Both the blazer and the pants look baggy and don't hang well, Perhaps that is how HB intended the design to be worn but I prefer a perfect fit when it comes to suits. I have never been a fan of double breasted blazers. Too many buttons perhaps..

In my had, this type of suits are old fashioned. It is too baggy and too big. Even the pattern looks just like pattern from my dad's suits. And he is in his 70's. Obviosly, the fashion is returning, but still, it is a no for me.

In Spain men do not wear that kind of pattern. Neither back in the day or now. Too much jazzy.

I understand this baggy look is in vogue now but that doesn't mean it looks good. As Edita said, it looks like Letizia raided her dad's closet. The fit does not work on her petite frame. I love the coat though.

Her father is still "young", 67 years old and very modern...lol....He is also a journalist as the grandma.

That means he was only 20 years old when Letizia was born. That is a very young father!

Yes!! Her mother is 67 years old too. Letizia is eldest daughter. (Telma is 45 and Erika passed away, at 31, she would have been 43.)

Baggy over baggy. With heels that make the bottom of the pants .. fly. It’s a really visually unappealing combination.

I believe it's new but I'm not sure who it's by. Vanitatis says it's by Felipe Verala but I need to get this confirmed.

Elizabeth, I think we saw this coat before, but I can't remember on which occasion. Apparently it was by Felipe Varela.

Vera, I initially thought the same thing but I don't see it in the collection. I keep track of the coats Queen Letizia has worn on Pinterest:

Everything here is intentionally over-sized: blazer, trousers, coat and clutch. This is an androgynous ensemble that the Queen commands - she looks like she's just stepped off of a Max Mara runway. I've inspected photographs closely and the seam lines sit beautifully on the shoulders, the glen check aligns perfectly and the suit is relaxed with minimal detailing. Lightly padded shoulders add definition to the loose cut, while the wide-leg trousers and crisp front creases help balance the proportions. The menswear-inspired tailoring is offset by the feminine silk blouse, sumptuous satin lining of the outerwear and glossy hair. Beige within the check elegantly ties together with the tones of the blouse and belted coat, the black buttons have been used to similar effect coordinating with the shoes and clutch. I adore the tiny detail of the metallic gold clasp on the bag which matches the hoops and ring, there is considered finesse. For a future repeat, the suit may look stylish accessorised with navy to emphasise the fine vertical lines of royal blue within the check. It's unfortunate that loose fit double-breasted suits, such as this, photograph badly. The wool blend isn't sturdy and seems to gather in the front of the blazer during motion. Regardless of this, for me, this is a strong ensemble.

I was interested to see how well the gold touches worked against the grey. Gold makes sense against the wrap coat, but there might be a tendency to go for silver against cool grey, which in fact wouldn't work at all. It needs the gentle lift from a touch of gold. For years I had a rule of silver with cool colours and gold for warm but that is long gone since I started following intelligent royal fashion sites!!

Thanks Simone. Yes I did see those pics but it's impossible to say what she is wearing, and because it was a private funeral I thought it best not cover the event x

Is an outsize pant suit meant to be a gender statement for the event? I'm only slowly adjusting to wide jackets coming back into fashion and might get used to them, but overall the styling is not my personal favourite. Letizia naturally wears the Hugo Boss as well as it could be done, her natural restraint always keeps her within elegant boundaries, though it definitely looks best to me when mostly covered by the heavenly neutral Varela wrap coat. Happy to see the HB Fanila clutch back with the pointy toe Magrits. Gold hoops finish the look off nicely.

I love the coat...it is such a classic. I am in agreement with others who think the suit looks like something from her Dad's closet. Not sure that this suit would flatter anyone.

I had never seen a man (for sure nobody's dad) in a suit like that in Spain, it would have been called "a clown", obviously it has a masculine vibe but it is for a woman, at least in Spain.

Even though this suit is larger/baggy as opposed to the Queens petite frame, she still manages to look elegant and chic. White silk shirt perfect choice. The clutch, shoes and hoop earrings reign this ensemble in nicely. Love the coat.
