There were no sartorial surprises from Queen Letizia today.  She looked majestic in her midnight blue Felipe Varela velvet gown first worn for the 2018 Pascua Militar (shown below).

FASHION FLASHBACK
Below is a gallery of Letizia's past looks for the Diplomatic Corps reception, all by Felipe Varela (except for 2019). She has a tendency to repeat outfits, and also recycle ensembles worn for the Pascua Militar parade.

She wore the same gown 2008 and 2009. Gown from this year, I think I would like it if it was black rather than blue.

She can't wear black at a diplomatic event, the protocol does not allow it.

Simone, she wore black in 2012 and 2015, and monochrome in 2018, so your statement about protocol is false.

Sorry, but it was BROWN, black is totally forbiden.

Milly, black can't be worn in the morning, those ones are dark maroon, dark brown.

The sequined top and skirt looks black to me but that could be the lighting! Also the dress worn in 2018 is definitely black, so is it ok because it's mixed with white? Also she wore a black top in 2010. I assume that's also acceptable? Do you mean she can't wear full solid black from top to toe?

Monochrome is allowed because it does not mean "mourning". However back in the day the "mourning" for the Queens was wearing white, because of that the Catholic Queens wear white when they meet the Pope, (The privilège du blanc).

She can change the protocol, the conservative ones would not be very thrilled.

I'm with Milly. The sequined top and maxi skirt ensemble is black. In light of what Wendy said, I think the sequins distinguishes it from being a "mourning" outfit so Letizia probably felt comfortable to wear all-black because nobody would wear sequins for a "mourning" outfit. This does not represent a sombre look so it's okay for it to be black.

She has worn out that dress lots of times..

The Spanish media says it is "chocolate brown". You forget that we see her on tv, etc....

The 2018 outfit was definitely black, albeit mixed with a white jacket!

I love the beautiful blue/purple colour of this gown as well as the rich velvet (not sure) fabric. The tight fitting bodice and belt give it a formal conservative look which I think is a requirement for this event. But, I really dislike the hairstyle with those little ringlets hanging down the sides. I wish Letizia and her hairstylist weren't so creative with her hair. They sometimes come up with some really unflattering styles.

Velvet, especially midnight blue velvet, is always luxurious and dramatic. My only quibble with this dress is that Letizia is so covered up. I do realize this is a dignified occasion. A sleeve that is a few inches shorter, or a less buttoned up neckline, would have softened the severity. I would have preferred sapphire rather than aquamarine earrings.

This is a beautiful gown, the night coloured velvet is sublime. Sadly, there are a few details I would change, preferring a simpler design. I would remove the fullness of the sleeves for a sleek slim-cut, and have the stunning embroidery climbing the forearms echoing the hemline of the dress. I'm averse to Peter Pan collars so I would reconfigure the neckline, possibly, with a very subtle bateau, relocating the crystal buttons to the back of the gown in favour of a smooth bodice. Lastly, the matching belt, I would remove the buckle and have a secret clasp align with the fastening at the back. I appreciate my re-working would be similar to the silhouettes of the black velvet 22/02/17, teal 06/01/17 and ruby 26/01/17 gowns also created by Felipe Varela, but their simplicity with refined, sumptuous, details looked truly breathtaking on the Queen. Regardless of my adjustments, Letizia looks regal and it's exciting to see her experiment with a romantic hairstyle.

I like 2008 and 2009 the best. I can see why she repeated this outfit. I wouldn't mind if she wore it again. This is a tricky event to style. She looked fine, but it wasn't spectacular this year. I like Felipe's matching tie. I am trying to decide if I like Leti's loose updo. It's more casual and I'm not sure this is the event for a more casual updo.

I love this gown. Beautifully tailored. The simplicity of it, luscious velvet blue, just so striking. The Queen looked so regal and elegant. Gown fits perfectly, and shows the Queens perfect posture superbly. Her hair is soft looking. The aquamarine teardrop earrings are a excellent choice, there gorgeous. The King looked very handsome!

The velvet material adds a real touch of luxury to this beautiful deep blue/purple gown and it fits Queen Letizia well. It is a wonderful colour and it suits her. However, I do not like these loose tendrils; they do the Queen no favours and make the overall look less formal and less regal. They actually don't suit her in my opinion. She's a beautiful dignified woman and has worn many wonderful hair styles across the years but this loose stranded lokk is not for her.

It is a very tricky event for fashion as the 6th of January. They are the only ones where the protocol is very hard. It is in the morning but a long dress is required and she needs to be total covered.
The hair reminds me the Victorian era ladies, Proud & Perjudice and those things.

I love this Varela gown in sumptuous velvet, a wonderful use of a sometimes difficult fabric, the style and richness combined are eminently royal. Letizia's updo with loose strands has a period feel to it which enhances how the whole outfit is perfectly placed in a palatial context.

The fit and tailoring of the shirt-style bodice is wonderful to see, such a refreshing change from all the High Street royals seem obliged to adopt these days. The neckline is cut beautifully to be just a little low on the throat, and the neatly rounded collar flaps lend some space by being set slightly apart from the top of the row of delightfully ornamented buttons.

The Bvlgari teardrops are sensational and showcased to perfection here, and I can easily live with clumpy platforms, even shiny ones, from Magri,t when they are well hidden under a full-length skirt and quietly help a girl to a precious extra fraction of regal height

I actually really liked her 2010 look and I especially liked her 2018 look. This dress is amazing, Leti just looks a bit tired, I would say. Or perhaps it's the makeup.
