The Queen of Spain attended the 5th Educational Congress of Rare Diseases today which took place at the secondary school Pedro de Valdivia in the town of Villanueva de la Serena.
The meeting was organised by the Spanish Federation of Rare Diseases (FEDER) of which Her Majesty is honorary president.
After the conference, Queen Letizia stopped by a few classrooms to meet some of the high school students.
Following a week of pastel hues and elegant dresses, it was back to contemporary styling for the Spanish queen today. Letizia repeated a look she premiered last May for the FameLab International competition.
It consists of a white Massimo Dutti textured weave gilet teamed with black leather leggings.
She extended the modern styling to her footwear today, ditching her usual stiletto high-heels for a new pair of Adolfo Domínguez’s Mule Slippers. The loafer style slip-ons are made from bovine leather upper and are available €136/US$249.
Letizia carried a new bucket style handbag today. It appears to be decorated with tonal flower, leaf and pom pom appliques. I have been unable to identify so please drop me a line if you recognise it!
ID UPDATE (8 Jul 2018): The bag is an old season peice by Zara. Thanks to Edith for sending me a hint in the comments!
The casual sophistication of today's outfit is inconsistent with Letizia's previous sartorial choices for this annual event which have been more refined and elegant. What did you think of this year's contemporary look?

Villanueva de la Serena is located in Badajóz, so Southwest of Spain.

I find the combo of a sleeveless top and leather pants to be odd. Sleeveless suggests a rather warm day and leather, I see as for colder weather. An while Letizia deserves to wear comfortable, flat shoes, these loafers look clunky and heavy. She could have worn a more elegant looking flat shoe.

The weather is totally crazy!! Now is snowing again by the Sierra of Madrid, Navacerrada and the Sierras of the North.

I think this is one of my least favourite Letitzia looks. The top half looks too large - rather like an ill-fitting house-coat. The leggings are not flattering. It be on trend but I think she looks better in tailored outfits. I loved what she wore in 2016 and 2017.

Agree. When you look at the previous outfits worn at this event you can see the old Letizia. She was so elegant, well tailored and perfect.

The entire outfit is unflattering. I had never seen or heard of a gilet before and I don't see the purpose of a very long sleeveless blazer.

I don't like the mules with this outfit. She should have stuck with the pumps or at least wore a pair of pointy toed flats.

Although Letizia's look is very trendy, I dont't like it. Maybe it's fun but not stylish at all.

I'm glad that she's giving her poor feet a rest, those high heels can't be good every day! However, I'm not sure about the look I don't think that the gilet suits her

This is the worst outfit I have ever seen on Letizia. The mules are very ugly. And with that baggy blazer... To me it is like she is at home and saying: "Honey, I'm just going to neighbours to lend some milk, I'll be right back!"

I think this outfit is put together coherently, but it's ugly (the bag may be nice, but I can't see it very well). The thing with Letizia that has baffled me for years is that she seems to make a deliberate effort not to have a certain dress style. One day it's mint guipure, another a pink babydoll pram suit, then a monochrome throwback to the 90s like today. I was looking at a blog dedicated to Rania the other day (and please don't attack me for preferring her to Letizia - I don't , and I don't feel I need to prefer on or the other), and she has some very quirky pieces, but they're always within the same, almost prescriptive style, but Letizia likes surprises!

I agree, Beata. Letizia doesn't seem to be able to define her style. She seems to want to be super trendy every now and then (as in this outfit) Really a queen doesn't need to be cutting edge trendy, just well dressed and appropriate to the occasion. Perhaps Letizia doesn't want to be seen as predictable.

Agree, Beata. I also believe that Letizia likes surprises :). Letizia said once that she is not interested in fashion. But I think she definitely loves shoes, shoes, shoes! She must have a huge collection of them.

Laura, I think 'wants to be super trendy every now and then' sums up her style perfectly'! I actually think today's outfit was put together to showcase these super trendy (in Europe) mules. Are they so fashionable in Canada, too? You are Canadian, aren't you?

In Spain we like she being trendy, a woman who represents a very modern country. She is interested in fashion because the people ask for it. Mules are very on trend, these ones are not very beautiful though.

Varela is the problem, nobody likes him in Spain too much. We want a trendy Queen, also she is wearing Spanish brands today.... Massimo Dutti and Adolfo Dominguez. It is not very flattering but comfortable. That's all, most important is what she does, not want she wears...

Nuria, I don't have a problem with her trying to be trendy :) Although the question of modernity is an interesting one. I can't think of more modern countries than the Scandinavian ones, and yet their monarchs, even the young ones, stick to a certain formal dress code, including national folk costumes.

The dress code must be different here, a school with young people and diseases it's not formal at all....

Nuria, to my understanding this is an international blog and not only dedicated to Spaniards. Everyone has the right to share opinions (including critics) on this blog as long as they are not insulting. I love this blog because Elizabeth is a professional and is doing a great job. I think your input is always appreciated but please accept also opinions you might not share.

My blood pressure is really low right now 😨. I don't know what is worse: the dichotomy between the 2017-2018 outfits in this event or the dichotomy between the last pink look and this one. 😨

I hesitate to say this because it has been contentious in the media a few times this year. However, I want to voice my opinion because I haven't heard anyone frame it the way I'm thinking about it. What strikes me as inappropriate about sleeveless tops is not about modesty but about formality. The men are all in shirts and jackets. If one of the men came in a sleeveless shirt (even if it were tailored with buttons and a collar), I think the majority of observers would find it too casual. When I look at the group photo, the other women present are wearing shirts and jackets or sleeved tops, like the men. So, I think this outfit is too casual for the occasion because of the bare arms. Had she put a lightweight long sleeved top underneath the vest, I think it would've been appropriate. In a different context, I have no problem with the bare arms. Otherwise, I actually like the outfit. Mules are uncomfortable to me but I like the look with these pants and I like black and white and the baggy/skinny contrast.

These sleeveless issue hasn't had very sense in Spain nowadays. We attend church and get married sleeveless even in humongous decolletages. Men have to wear suits but no women, in summer we are allowed to wear what we want. Also she was at a secondary school with young people. No problems, other thing is that is not very flattering. I think you all are exaggerating a bit

As representative of the "Casa Real" and Honory President of FEDER the Queen was on duty. It was by no means an informal event.

The issue is not either the mules or the sleeves, it's this gilet is awful and the mules are in fashion, however these ones are horrible.

I think Letizia looks sharp and is keeping things interesting by mixing it up. She can wear almost anything.

I love this outfit, very funky and youthful without sacrificing the dignity of Letizia's position. I prefer it with the flats over the heels, I find heels a little tacky with tight trousers, and being mules brings the look bang up to date. Not too sure about the bag though, not a fan of those fussy embellishments which are a bit fussy compared with the otherwise sleek outfit.

On pinterest I have seen quite a similar black bucket bag today with flower and leaf appliques but without pom pom. The provenance is however a bit strange.
