I’m sorry, but I just don’t understand this skirt with a hole in it. Not dignified enough for an official engagement, IMHO. Better for a private gathering.

Anne, I so agree with you when you say this skirt is inappropriate for a Royal to wear to an official engagement. Some clothes that are edgy make an innovative fashion statement. This hole is not fashion, it is a gimmick. Likewise ripped jeans are not suitable for most occasions. Without the hole, this would be quite a nice outfit.

You should change the "royal" concept in Spain, we do not pay for their clothes so can do whatever they want. Actually the Palace has said that she can wear sneakers the whole time .

It doesn't matter who pays for Letizia's clothes. She is at an official engagement and is representing the Monarchy of Spain. This outfit is inappropriate. The logic that you present, means that Letizia could wear a bathing suit to a state funeral...and it would be okay, because she is paying for her own clothes.

And who marks what is appropiate or not? The Monarchy in Spain is there because they are cheaper than a President ( in fact in Spain we do not have a Prime Minister, He is called Presidente del gobierno -President of the Government-), if they became more expensive , they will be out. So all those things about tiaras, jewels, etc, are not the cup of tea in this country and they do not have a representation budget, also there is not protocol at all and the spirit of the country is not conservative , not even between the aristocracy who sent Alfonso XIII to the exile and Juan Carlos I , too. Spain was a Republic two times.

Positives ----The actual skirt with swish, fall and movement I love, the length is perfect.
Negatives ----The pattern of the skirt IMO is too distracting. The hole in the skirt I dislike. It may be modern, who knows? but just like modern designer jeans that are torn or ripped, holes ect... I dont like them at all either, I dont find them elegant or stylish whatsoever, but that's just me, some may say old fashioned! The black shoes (I think there black) are lovely.
The earrings are always a delight to see, gorgeous.

Why? Without the hole, cute outfit. With hole, just an attempt to get attention. HM doesn't need to attempt to get attention. I hope she doesn't get into the habit of trying for "edgy" at the expense of beauty.

I believe the skirt can be work with one leg put through the hole, as shown on the model. QL is not wearing it that way, and I agree with everyone that the gaping hole makes the skirt and the wearer look ridiculous.

Simone, I looked at the link you provided. NOPE! It doesn't look right or appropriate with the leg through the hole.

Really? I think this skirt belongs in a closet with ripped jeans.
I do like the new Magrit pumps. The little bow is a nice.

This skirt is awful. Is this some new trend? I hope not. I'm still not used to ripped jeans with holes let alone skirts. I think they are trying to be 'original' but it's a terrible design by H&M.

One of those ideas that might sound clever conceptually but does not translate in practice. The cut out really looks like the skirt met an accident. Well, it gave me a laugh.

Yikes. If I had to wear this skirt I'd stick my leg out through the gap like the model. Apart from the skirt QL looks great. Fabulous new shoes

This is definitely a cut-out too far from Toga Archives, it simply looks out-of-place in all the regular check pattern, even though that looks to have been varied in the print. The original design was definitely edgy as one leg is supposed to go through the hole making it too bold a design for a working royal, and at a level of fashion which intends to draw attention to itself and away from the main event. Letizia is trying to keep the edge while staying demure but the experiment doesn't work for me.

Away from the gaping hole the outfit is sensible and suitable with classic crew neck black top and the beautiful Armani bag with the sweet Magrit bow pumps. I can see Letizia is among quite a colourful, fashion-forward crowd at the film festival and to that extent may not have stood out that much from the crowd. But the single, prominent hole remains simply random worn like this, and out of sync. I still love the Triple Hoop earrings!
