In Spain it is said that the flowers are "petunias" ( I can't find out their name in English, they must be from Spain). Their origin is South America and they were brought up here.
It reminds me a lot what Matilde Cano used to do years ago. She is in Sevilla, speaking about the language so a typical "andalúz" flowers embrodery.
Petunias:

I wonder if you have ever seen the typical dress from the South of Spain, mainly the Autonomous Comunity of Andalucía, Sevilla is the capital city.
You can take a look on that web:

Thanks for the link, definitely a few red petunias on a dark background there, so Letizia is spot on with a local reference there! They are also called petunias in English, I grow some every summer in a patio tub, they are very sunny, I love them :)

I read some comments on other sites about this outfit and almost everyone disliked it especially the cape. Sadly, I am one of the few that love it. The Zara cape is one of my favorite items and I was hoping to see it worn again. It's an amazing piece that is so versatile. I own one in burgundy( not Zara). I love everything about this outfit. The red and black contrast is striking & along with the petunias which were confined to the skirt are not overwhelming. It looks like a Pertegaz design and reminds of the grey dress with orange flowers worn last month at the POA event. I'm looking forward to next week when the King and Queen travel to Cuba.

It seems that you like the "Spanish customs". I think you liked the Mantón of Manila one too. You could live in Andalucía and blend in well.
They touch people a lot, I do not know if a Canadian might feel a bit embarrased.

You're right Wendy. I am learning a lot about Spain's fabulous culture, customs and language. I even like the warmth of the people & touching, hugging etc.. In Canada the weather is cold and it makes the people cold. We are going to get 10-15 cm of snow today!!

Well, not all Spain...We have 35 ski resorts....in the North is snowing and very near of Madrid too, Somosierra Sierra. Don't forget the Pyrenees. That kind of weather is only in the South East...
People is a bit colder in the rest of the Country too.
You will be welcome!!

I'm afraid that there is too much going on here for me, with the different styles and black and red scattered throughout the ensemble.  There needs to be less of one colour. This style blouse would easily accommodate a warm, long-sleeved, thermal vest if it was cold in Seville yesterday. Therefore, I would have preferred the red blouse, skirt, a simple black waist belt and the black Prada Saffiano pumps. However, I think this skirt would have looked strongest, teamed with a black turtleneck, a simple black waist belt, red crocodile-effect pumps and the bezel set diamond and Australian pearl earrings in full to echo the white in the floral (with one of Letizia's many black/or red coats draped over her shoulders while outside if needed). The Zara cape may be better suited to a more streamlined modern outfit.  All of the pieces are nice individually, the embroidery traversing both sides of the skirt is a considered and eye-catching detail. But I felt this look needed more restraint colour-wise to appear more cohesive overall.

Jennifer, it is funny because the capes in Spain are considered "old" not modern given that it was something very typical in the XVI century and the "Tuna" of the Universities. Red shoes are very typical in the South of Spain too. I would like to know what the people in Sevilla thought. Lately she does these winks more frequent, I do not recall it so much in the past.
A "Tuna" is a group or brotherhood of university students who, wearing the old dress of the university, in the image of the old goliards are characterized by singing, playing and traveling the world thanks to these skills - although not all or very few are musicians by profession" ...

Hi Wendy, thank you for your comment, I love hearing your thoughts! History is so important, I commend the Queen and Eva Fernández for weaving considerate detailing into her outfit which honor tradition. It's been very sadly stated here, that she is one of the weaker members of the royal family, so thoughtful intricacies like these will hopefully help warm press and public opinion. On this occasion, I would have taken one or two pieces that identified with Spain and styled the rest of the look more quietly around them: like a black top paired with the gorgeous shoes and skirt. Overall, I feel that the balance of colours and proportions was just slightly off. I would have preferred to have seen the red used as an accent colour throughout the outfit. I agree it would be wonderful to know how this look was received in Sevilla!

The thing is that flamenco dresses are red and black and flowers or "lunares", polka dots? I imagine that for a foreigner it is a bit odd. I am from the North and I would have not worn this outfit, every body said "Are you going to the Feria in Sevilla"???? I do not know if it is necessary given that she is,watched outside or just the contrary??
You only need to google, "trajes de flamenca".

An she does not wear the "mantilla and peineta" anymore, Queen Sofía used to wear it: the tradition at military events and high protocol...

I fear it's perverse of me given how much I liked the slightly outre Pertegaz pussy bow dress recently, but I'm finding this present outfit a bit too costumey. I feel thoroughly guilty about it, what's more, given how carefully it has been assembled.

The Hugo Boss blouse is fabulous, Letizia really rocks these gathered crew necklines, and the skirt is probably ok, if a little over-decorated, but I'm coming unstuck on the cape worn over the skirt. Particularly from the back, there seems to be too much fabric around in general and the result is a note of heaviness. The cape has worked beautifully in the past with trousers, I don't if Letizia has tried it with a skirt before.

I like non-matched accessories, a good touch with a two-tone outfit, the Magrit croc pumps are an ideal choice for a touch of savvy. The diamond studs remain a favourite of mine.

Don't feel guilty, Bertie. I didn't like the Pertegaz pussy bow dress but I like this one. Different strokes for different folks.

This cape looks very similar to one the Duchess of Cornwell wears. The red silk shirt is gorgeous, so rich in colour, gathered neckline is unusual but I like it.. Love the skirt, the perfect length, beautiful poppy print. Red shoes are a great addition as is the lovely Archy handbag. This is a elegant look.

Ava, I googled the Duchess of Cambridge cape and while similar it is quite a bit shorter. I like Letizia's longer cape better.

A miss for me especially the cape. Skirt with the large flowers...also a no.

I would prefer the outfit without the cape. The skirt is stunning and the blouse and shoes coordinated well. But somehow the cape adds a retro vibe, that diminishes the beautify of the other pieces. I would have preferred a red clutch as the black one disappears into the black of the cape and skirt.
