Queen Letizia breaks sartorial tradition at the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony16/10/2020
The King and Queen of Spain accompanied by their daughters Leonor, Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofia, presided over the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards in Oviedo.
The annual event is traditionally held at the Campoamor Theater, however due to the pared back nature of this year's ceremony because of COVID-19 restrictions, the event was held at the Hotel de la Reconquista.
Upon arrival the royal family followed the tradition of walking the blue carpet with Queen Sofia.
The annual prizes are awarded by the Princess of Asturias foundation to people or organisations from around the globe who make notable achievements in science, humanities and public affairs. It is thought to be one of the most prestigious cultural events on the international agenda.
Following last year's debut, 14-year-old Leonor, Princess of Asturias addressed the attendees in a four minute speech during the awards ceremony which bears her title.
Her parents were immensely proud.
This event is one of the most anticipated on the Spanish royal calendar and we are always excited to see what Her Majesty will premier at this annual gala. However, since this year has been like no other, Queen Letizia showed signs of austerity by opting for a Delpozo repeat.
The gorgeous insignia blue cocktail dress was first worn for the 50th anniversary celebration of the AS newspaper in December of 2017. We saw it again in October of 2018 when Their Majesties visited Paris.
Up until today, Letizia had only ever entrusted Felipe Varela to outfit her for this special occasion since her first attendance in 2004. Below is a look back at the ensembles worn since attending as Queen consort.
Do you have a favourite look, and what did you think of this evening's choice to repeat?

In 2017 Josep Font was the creative director of Delpozo, a former architecture student. In interviews, Font has said that his studies have defined the way he designs which, is evident in this avant-garde creation. This dress is spectacular, it is one of my all-time favourites of the Queen's. The sculpted flora and naked shoulder embody a romantic aesthetic, while the neat skirt and deep navy balance the proportions adding a timeless, couture sensibility. Slightly larger earrings would have complemented the look, understandably, jewellery is restrained given the current circumstances. Letizia looked wonderful on Friday evening, but looking back I find Paris 2018 to be the most successful wearing of the dress, the styling (minus the large clutch) was close to perfection. Over the years I've wished that we would see more pieces from this house in Letizia's wardrobe. There have been some wearable garments within collections and if necessary designs can be filtered down.

Jennifer, I'm confused when you say you like the 2018 styling best, minus the purse. I don't see any difference in the styling other than perhaps the earrings. Aren't the shoes the same? Where's the difference in styling?

Hi Laura, sorry I should have been clearer. I adored the effortless updo in 2018 and diamond drop earrings (I'm sure the hairstyle wasn't effortless at all). I found 2017's hairstyle rather severe.

I give high marks to Delpozo for creating this unique and elegant dress in a very original design. It's basically a classic style but the shoulder detail gives it a touch of avant garde sophistication. It's a

I don't recall that dress from the first time around, but agree it is one hot stunner!

Sadly, I don't think Letizia has ever worn this dress again. I don't know how she decides what to re-wear and what to not re-wear. Maybe one day we will see it again.

I've never cared for this dress on Letizia. It is a case of the dress wearing her, not her wearing the dress. The rosette swirl at the shoulder overpowers her, the skirt is too long and the waist pleats too bulky. The colour is the only thing I like.

We are being spoiled with some gorgeous repeats for this special weekend, this glorious Delpozo never fails to impress every time it comes out. I'm quite struck by how an apparently frivolous and exaggerated flower embellishment, plus a bare shoulder, work out so well for both a sociable evening out and now for a military formal environment. The placing and proportions of it are clearly the work of genius. I'm glad Letizia's hair is away from her face as I can't see it working with her hair down. Letizia is wise to stick with matching blue accessories, the dress has more than enough stylish decoration of its own.

Bertie, You've changed your mind. I looked back to see what comments people gave in the past and so read yours. You didn't care for the dress in the previous wearings.

This is a fabulous dress, beautifully crafted. Its unique and so elegantly worn. The colour is very fetching, a glorious shade of blue. The shoulder line and ornamentation works beautifully, combined with the body of the dress and length, perfect. Choice of blue accessories, superb.
