This is a beautiful, gorgeous dress. I'm glad to see it make another appearance. However I don't like the wide waistband since it interrupts the pattern of the dress. A thinner one (maybe an inch thick) would be more subtle and allow the pattern to flow more evenly.

Although very different, this dress has always reminded me of Grace Kelly's stunning black & white evening gown worn in 'Rear Window' by American costume designer Edith Head. This is an absolutely gorgeous dress with its sparkly cinched-in-waist and floaty layers of dreamy chiffon. In 2017 the voluminous skirt was complemented by the impeccable tailoring of the fitted bodice. Varela cleverly positioned the jet-black embroidery around the waist for a flattering effect. I imagine I would want to twirl the night away in such a creation. Minor quibbles: I appreciate that the above event is less formal than the prestigious Princess of Asturias Awards, but sadly, I find the presentation of the dress less polished than its 2017 debut. The dress benefits massively from a petticoat (a petticoat was worn in 2017). Here the skirt is flat and, as a result, some of Varela's 'magic' is lost. In addition, being a bespoke piece, it is a great shame that the lining and top fabric do not meet. Styling-wise, the Prada pumps may be a tad heavy (Grace Kelly wore timeless black criss-cross sandals) and although the Queen's hair looks pretty, a sleek updo would have allowed one to admire the clean precision of the neckline. As I so often mention, I would love to see Letizia return to Varela once or twice a year. It is my opinion that Varela is responsible for some of her most elegant (in terms of fit, design & quality of fabrics) looks to date. Over the years there have been some overworked garments but, overall, Varela has created some sensational pieces.

This is a beautifully crafted dress, with exquisite detail, the embellished embroidery is gorgeous. I think the presentation of this dress at this event was appropriate. I must confess to preferring the 2017 outing of this dress. With the under petticoat worn previously, the volume in my opinion brought the dress to life, in this instance the skirt is basically flat. I also preferred the updo of last time and the addition of select pieces of jewellery, I understand why pieces such as this were not worn this time. Regardless of my tastes, the Queen looked splendid.

This Felipe Varela dress makes a worthy repeat with its expert tailoring and exquisite monochrome embroidery. The black-tipped Oriental raised collar and cap sleeves are beautifully cut, the beaded waist as defining as ever, and the floaty skirt hem a magical finishing touch. The black accessories of simple Lambertson Truex clutch and shiny Prada pumps are just right for the look, and likewise low-key diamond studs against loose hair.
