The King and Queen of Spain are currently on a three-day state visit to the Netherlands. They arrived in the capital, Amsterdam, yesterday afternoon, and this morning they were officially welcomed by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima with a ceremony at Dam Square.

During the ceremony, the national anthems of both countries were played, and King Felipe and King William reviewed the troops of the Guard of Honour.
Following the formalities, King Felipe and Queen Letizia went on foot to the National Monument for a wreath-laying ceremony.

Sorry, but this outfit is a loser, from top to bottom, earrings excepted. Not special at all, looks frankly cheap and not up to the occasion. The hat was weird and the tweed just seems to casual a fabric. And the sleeves are already past their sell by date style-wise. Sorry HM, usually so beautiful, but not this time.

When do you think such a sleeve style was in fashion, as I fear I must have missed it?! They certainly strike an odd note with me, and the whole outfit is a little dowdy with the tweed, headpiece, and low heels.

This is a great dress! I love the cape/sleeve combination along with the lovely green tweed fabric. It's classic and contemporary at the same time. It looks like a cold day in the Netherlands so it would help keep Letizia warm. I agree with Jessica that the hat is unattractive and unflattering. I don't like the odd shape and the colour doesn't really go well with the dress.

I rarely ever say this, but Letizia looks frumpy. The tweed, although a pretty colour, seems hefty for the design, especially the sleeves. Since the belt and purse are in a good matching colour, I would have preferred shoes in the same tone. What's with the hat? It looks silly and although the odd colour doesn't especially clash, it certainly doesn't enhance the dress. The earrings are stunning, but far too elegant and "evening wear" to go with tweed. The cape, when worn, looks like a blanket with a too heavy fur collar. Also, Letizia does not wear hose. I realize this is the "modern" look, but without hose you see every sinew in her feet and ankles. If you enlarge the first photo, you will see how Queen Maxima's legs and feet have a much more polished look, that hose provides.

Great points about the hose. I agree with your point about 'frumpy', I was tempted to call it matronly. I thought I would give the earrings a pass on the grounds that it's for a state visit, but it's not Letizia's best look I think

I'm afraid I prefer this outfit when the dress is covered by the Herrera fur collar wrap, which ties in nicely with the unusual veiled headpiece and nude Herrera slingbacks.

But I find the Moses Nieto dress styling odd. The bodice is conventional enough, but the sleeves being both flared at the cuff and slit seem confusing. The resulting flaps of fabric look a bit clumsy, though it is neat how the angles of the fabric are echoed in the sassy little Moses Nieto bag. The textured tweed of the dress fabric is fun and I assume has flecks of paler nude which are echoed in the hat and shoes. I think the hemline is a little long to be worn with such low heels.

Queen Sofia's emerald and diamond drop earrings are a winner and nicely showcased by the clean crew neck of the dress bodice. Despite my misgivings, I think overall this is a worthy royal outfit for an official welcome.

I respectfully have to disagree with you that the dress looks better with the cape. I find the cape is very messy looking and hard on the eyes. There is too much fabric at the front and it swamps Letizia.

I can see where you're coming from on the cape, but perhaps saying I think the dress looks better hidden under it might simply underline how dim a view I take of the dress!

I'm a bit late to the comments and it's interesting to see such a negative reaction because I cannot express how much I love this outfit from head to toe! I adore this dress - everything about it is brilliant. The colour is gorgeous, the texture interesting, and the sleeves and cut elegant and sophisticated.

While the headpiece is unusual, I find it interesting and I think the neutral shoes, gloves and hat are complementary. For me this ensemble is a huge win and the first thing I've been motivated to comment on in ages.

This dress is fabulous, love it! The tweed ensemble appeals to me very much. I really like the interesting feature of the sleeves. The small Lucia bag is gorgeous, the Avocado green color, such a beautiful! color. The earrings are pretty.
I dont find the hat appealing.

This type of headpiece was fashion in the 50-s, even brides wore it in white the little veil included. You see in fashion everything is coming back regularly : the Dior style of the 50-s (the wide skirt with much fabric), the Marlene or Palazzo pants, stiletto's, block heels, midi skirts or midi dresses, mini skirts, shorts and capri's, etc...
The dress is a piece of art with silver threads that shine with the sun.
In Spain only nuns wear stockings here there was a revolution about It many years ago...much more when they shine...very tacky.
