The National Day is an annual national holiday that commemorates the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus for Spain on 12th October 1492. It is intended to solemnly remember moments of collective history that are part of the common historical, cultural and social heritage, assumed as such by the vast majority of citizens.

The pale blue belted dress was created by Spanish fashion designer, Maria Barragán. The eponymous brand specializes in Haute Couture and custom-made pieces, and has workshops in Madrid and Almería.

This is the first time Her Majesty has not worn an ensemble by Felipe Varela for the annual National Day celebrations. Below is a look back at her past outfits for this patriotic day since becoming queen consort in 2014.

The Queen looks elegant in soft blue. This is a perfectly nice ensemble, but sadly, the details, and fabric choice don't wow me. The fabric is noticeably thick (see photographs on Getty), and the belt sits uncomfortably between the two folds on either side. If you look closely at the stock photograph above, the four-folds look crisp and intentional. On Letizia, the folds could be mistaken for excess fabric. A simplified design, in lined silk, could be divine. I wish the bodice skimmed the torso and had a curved stand collar. I would possibly remove all of the folds, and replace the belt with a matching skinny patent belt for a lighter look. To add some detail, dainty fabric-covered buttons could be placed down the wrap skirt, and on the cuffs. Here is a link to a similar style dress by Armani. The silk elegantly skims the body, and the details have been cleverly placed at the neck keeping the rest of the dress long and clean.

It's a shame that since Friday of last week platforms have been added to the new pumps. I appreciate that platforms may be necessary for comfort. Magrit used to make built-in platforms on Letizia's pumps (25/05/17 & 30/03/17). As you can see, the platforms do not cover the entire sole of the pump. As a result, the platforms look far more discreet than what we see here.

I'd be afraid a slim belt might get lost among all the folds of fabric, and I think the monochrome needs the break it gets from the slightly chunky belt. I like the contrast of a near military-style belt on such a feminine garment and think it well handled. However, I can see the problem you have if coming from that fabulous Armani! Agree that the platforms are a curse.

This dress is exquisite and beautiful! The wraparound design gives the dress an amazing impression. It's elegant, feminine and stylish all at the same time. The colour is a little dull but the belt, metallic shoes and purse lift it up a notch. It's interesting Letizia's version has a totally different sleeve than the one shown on the model. I like both versions. This is definitely in my best top 5 picks for 2021.

I agree with Jennifer. To me the problem is that the dress doesn't fit the Queen the way it fits the model; it's too loose. Consequently, the folds drag downward around the waist and below it and the belt looks like it isn't tight enough to support the fabric.
On the Queen's right side, the draping isn't there as in the model and the dolman sleeves which are a design feature on the model don't show at all.
To sum up, the dress to me is basically way too loose, not fitted properly, and therefore doesn't hang the way the designer on the model intended. It isn't ugly, it just is ordinary.

This is a superb dress, its very feminine and so elegant. On the model it looks sensational, (I prefer these sleeves) The fit on the Queen not so much. The teardrop earrings are stunning, I adore these earrings. The choice of accessories I love. The Queen's hair pulled back was a great choice. Regardless of my opinions, the Queen looks lovely, as always.

I love this Maria Barragan dress, with its understated style and elegance it delivers quiet panache with aplomb. So many unusual features are skilfully delivered, from the high v-neck from the bodice foldover, to roomy dolman sleeves that tuck in nicely under the arm, which look well pushed up as Letizia has them. The slightly bulky silver buckle is a hint of masculine steel against soft, feminine folds, and its weight nicely balances the gentle flow of fabric.

The whole garment shows great confidence in the choice and handling of fabric. The skirt crossover is charmingly worked with some extra gathering at the waist so the knee slit doesn't betray an immodest amount of leg, while keeping its edge of sass. The subtle colouring of the Magrit accessories works well, though I still find the quilting on the clutch a bit heavy-handed. The Bvlgari aquamarine teardrops are superb, and wonderfully displayed with Letiizia's hair well back from her face. A win for me.
